XRP Rallies on Ripple’s SEC Efforts Despite ETF Outflows and Evernorth Debut Concerns
A recent Revolut service disruption affected cryptocurrency access, card payments and bank transfers after a technical failure at Google Cloud impacted its London infrastructure. While the British fintech confirmed that customer funds and personal data remained secure, the incident raised concerns about the reliability of centralized financial platforms.
The outage began at 06:08 UTC when Google Cloud’s europe-west2 region in London experienced technical issues. Revolut subsequently flagged 27 services as partially unavailable or affected, including its cryptocurrency features. Other financial institutions and public services that depended on the same cloud infrastructure also experienced disruptions.
Revolut said it was working to bring its services back online. By 17:00 UTC, some functions had recovered, although Reuters reported that most services listed on the company’s UK status page were still experiencing problems. Revolut later confirmed that the affected services had been restored.
Revolut Outage Raises Concerns About Crypto Accessibility
The incident highlights an important issue for cryptocurrency holders: owning digital assets does not always mean having uninterrupted access to them.
Revolut allows customers to buy and sell cryptocurrencies through its centralized platform. This means users rely on the company’s systems to check their balances, monitor holdings and execute trades. When the platform becomes unavailable, customers may temporarily lose access to the tools needed to manage their investments.
However, an inaccessible account does not automatically indicate that the underlying assets have been lost. Revolut stated that customer funds and data remained safe during the outage. No verified evidence showed that the incident resulted in stolen cryptocurrency or missing balances.
Even brief interruptions can be significant during periods of market volatility. Customers who cannot access their trading accounts may miss opportunities to enter or exit positions. However, there has been no independent confirmation that Revolut users incurred such losses during this incident.
The disruption also illustrates the risks associated with centralized financial infrastructure. A technical problem affecting Google Cloud’s London region disrupted multiple organizations, demonstrating how services from different providers can rely on the same underlying technology.
Google Cloud said its engineering team was investigating the incident and intended to publish a detailed analysis once the review was complete. The company’s official communications provide updates on the infrastructure issue.
Centralized Crypto Platforms Remain Vulnerable to Outages
The Revolut incident demonstrates that access to cryptocurrency depends on more than the operational status of blockchain networks. A blockchain may continue processing transactions while a centralized exchange or financial application experiences downtime. Customers using an intermediary may still be unable to access their accounts, even when the underlying network continues operating normally.
Self-custody can reduce dependence on a single company’s account infrastructure, but it introduces separate risks. Users must protect their private keys, verify transactions carefully and manage network fees. Holding assets in a personal wallet also does not eliminate every reliance on external infrastructure.
For Revolut customers, the immediate concern was the interruption of services rather than any confirmed loss of funds. The company maintained that customer money and information were safe, and subsequent reports indicated that the affected services had been restored.
The outage also comes as regulators pay closer attention to the technology companies supporting financial services. Reuters reported that UK authorities designated Google Cloud EMEA Limited as a critical third-party supplier to the financial sector in July 2026. European Union regulators have also identified major technology providers as critical dependencies for financial institutions.
This makes the incident relevant beyond Revolut. As banking, payments and cryptocurrency services increasingly rely on shared cloud infrastructure, a technical failure at one provider can affect several financial products simultaneously.
For crypto users, the main takeaway is to monitor official platform updates during outages, avoid assuming that inaccessible balances have disappeared, and understand how custody arrangements influence access to their assets.
The Revolut outage did not establish that customer funds were stolen or that blockchain networks had failed. Instead, it exposed a specific weakness in the digital asset ecosystem: access to cryptocurrency can depend on centralized infrastructure that users cannot directly control.
