Revolut Restores Services After Google Cloud Issues Disrupt Crypto Access

The Revolut service outage temporarily interrupted cryptocurrency access, card payments and bank transfers after technical issues affected Google Cloud’s London infrastructure. Revolut assured customers that their funds and personal information remained safe, although the incident exposed the vulnerabilities associated with centralized platforms and their dependence on external technology providers.

The disruption began at 06:08 UTC when Google Cloud reported problems in its London-based europe-west2 region. Revolut subsequently identified 27 services as partially unavailable or affected, including its cryptocurrency features. Other financial institutions and public services operating on the same cloud infrastructure also experienced disruptions.

Revolut worked throughout the day to restore normal operations. By 17:00 UTC, some services had recovered, but Reuters reported that most services listed on the company’s UK status page were still showing problems. Revolut later confirmed that the affected services had been restored.

Google Cloud Outage Highlights Cryptocurrency Access Risks

The incident highlighted a significant concern for cryptocurrency investors: holding digital assets does not necessarily guarantee continuous access to them.

Revolut customers rely on the company’s centralized systems to monitor their cryptocurrency holdings, check balances and execute trades. When these systems experience technical problems, users may temporarily lose access to their investments, even if the underlying assets remain secure.

Revolut confirmed that customer funds and personal data were safe during the outage. No verified evidence indicated that the incident resulted in stolen cryptocurrencies or missing account balances. The disruption affected service availability rather than demonstrating a confirmed loss of assets.

Nevertheless, interruptions can create difficulties during volatile market conditions. Customers who cannot access their accounts may be unable to react promptly to price changes or complete planned transactions. However, there is no independent confirmation that users missed particular trading opportunities during this outage.

The incident also demonstrated how multiple financial services can depend on a shared technology provider. Even when businesses operate independently, a failure affecting their common cloud infrastructure can interrupt several services at the same time.

Google Cloud said it was investigating the technical problems and planned to publish a more detailed report after completing its review.

Centralized Crypto Platforms Depend on External Technology

The outage underscored the difference between the continued operation of a blockchain network and the availability of a centralized application. Blockchain networks may continue processing transactions while an exchange or financial app experiences technical difficulties. Users who depend on that platform, however, may be unable to access their accounts or submit trading orders.

Self-custody wallets can reduce dependence on a single company by allowing investors to control their own private keys. However, users must take responsibility for protecting those keys, verifying transaction details and paying applicable network fees. Self-custody also does not eliminate all reliance on external technology and infrastructure.

For Revolut customers, the disruption primarily affected access to financial services rather than confirming any loss of cryptocurrency. The company maintained that customer funds and personal information remained secure before announcing that the affected services had been restored.

The incident comes as regulators pay greater attention to the technology companies supporting the financial sector. Reuters reported that UK authorities designated Google Cloud EMEA Limited a critical third-party supplier to the financial sector in July 2026. European Union regulators have also recognized major technology providers as important dependencies for financial services.

As banks, payment companies and cryptocurrency platforms increasingly rely on shared cloud infrastructure, technical failures can have consequences that extend across multiple businesses and services.

Crypto investors should monitor official announcements during service disruptions, avoid assuming that inaccessible balances indicate lost funds, and understand whether their holdings are managed by a centralized provider or stored in a wallet under their own control.

The Revolut outage provided no verified evidence of customer funds being stolen or blockchain networks failing. Instead, it highlighted a broader challenge facing the cryptocurrency industry: users may own digital assets but still depend on centralized systems outside their control to access and manage them.
