Monero Derivatives Gain Momentum Again as Leveraged Bets Increase Market Risk

Monero’s futures open interest has surged past $300 million as XMR recovers above $600, bringing leveraged trading activity close to levels recorded before the token’s steep January crash. The renewed buildup has raised concerns that the market could face another round of heavy liquidations if prices reverse.

The growing number of leveraged positions in Monero (XMR) futures could leave traders exposed to sudden and potentially severe price fluctuations.

Monero is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency designed to make transactions difficult to trace. With a market capitalization of roughly $10.9 billion, it holds the position of the second-largest privacy coin by market value.

According to SoSoValue, the notional value of outstanding Monero futures contracts has climbed above $300 million, approaching January’s high of approximately $320 million. Futures allow market participants to bet on an asset’s price direction without directly holding it. Monero’s open interest has crossed the $300 million mark on only a handful of occasions, all during the current year.

Crypto analyst Doctor Profit has highlighted the similarities between the current market and January’s conditions. The pseudonymous analyst warned that the latest buildup could precede a substantial liquidation event, pointing out that Monero fell 66% within 20 days the last time open interest reached a comparable level in January 2026. Doctor Profit previously identified Bitcoin’s 2025 market top and shifted toward accumulating assets in July this year.

Open interest can be assessed by looking at either the dollar value of outstanding contracts or the amount of cryptocurrency involved. Dollar-denominated open interest reflects the current value of positions and provides a useful way to compare derivatives activity across different digital assets. It can also offer an indication of potential liquidation exposure, since forced closures are generally measured in dollars.

The rise in Monero futures activity is also apparent when measured in XMR. Coin-denominated open interest has reached 515.73K XMR, its highest point in five weeks, up from approximately 400K XMR recorded a week earlier.

Liquidations happen when exchanges automatically close positions after traders fail to maintain the required margin. Leverage enables traders to control positions larger than their initial capital, increasing the potential for profits while magnifying the consequences of unfavorable price movements.

When the market moves against a leveraged position, losses can quickly erode the trader’s collateral. If the position reaches its liquidation threshold, the exchange closes it to prevent losses from exceeding the available margin.

Traders holding long positions are especially vulnerable to falling prices because their bets depend on the market moving higher. When bullish positions are heavily leveraged, forced closures can generate additional selling pressure. A relatively small decline can then set off successive liquidations, potentially intensifying the market downturn.

This dynamic was visible in January, when Monero’s open interest reached a record alongside a rising price, indicating that bullish futures exposure may have become overcrowded. XMR peaked near $790 on Jan. 14 before tumbling below $300 in the first week of February. Coinglass data linked the sell-off to several million dollars in liquidations involving long positions.

Monero is now displaying some of the same warning signs, with its price rising alongside futures open interest. XMR has recently climbed beyond $600, reaching its highest level since January.

Nevertheless, rising open interest does not automatically signal an impending crash. Whether the current buildup leads to another large-scale liquidation event will depend on future price action, traders’ leverage levels and how market participants manage their positions.
