Tokenized RWAs Gain Institutional Momentum, Retail Adoption Still Emerging

Tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) dominated discussions at Consensus Hong Kong 2026, where leading voices from finance and crypto examined how blockchain technology is modernizing traditional markets. The panel featured Evan Auyang of Animoca Brands, Christian Rau of Mastercard, Nicola White of Robinhood, and was moderated by Marcin Kazmierczak, co-founder of RedStone.

Panelists aligned with BlackRock COO Rob Goldstein’s recent assertion that digital ledgers represent the most significant financial innovation since double-entry bookkeeping. The comparison underscored the growing belief that tokenization could fundamentally reshape capital formation and asset ownership.

At present, the RWA sector remains largely institutional in nature. Capital flows are concentrated in tokenized U.S. Treasuries, money market funds, stablecoin-linked products, and collateral management solutions. Institutional-grade offerings — including BlackRock’s BUIDL fund and tokenization initiatives from Robinhood and Bitstamp — illustrate how major players are operationalizing blockchain-based finance.

Retail involvement, however, has yet to reach meaningful scale. During the session, only a small fraction of attendees indicated they personally hold tokenized RWAs. Speakers suggested that clearer regulatory frameworks in Europe are accelerating tokenized equities, while private credit, real estate, private equity, and alternative assets such as art represent high-potential areas for future expansion.

As private markets grow and investors increasingly seek fractional ownership and continuous liquidity, tokenization may unlock vast pools of traditionally illiquid assets.

The panel’s consensus was clear: tokenized RWAs have progressed from experimental concept to institutional utility. The next stage of growth hinges on broader retail access — a shift that could open trillions of dollars in value once infrastructure, compliance, and education gaps are bridged.
