Here’s why Bitcoin isn’t living up to its safe-haven promise versus gold.

Bitcoin Acts Like an “ATM” During Market Turmoil, While Gold Holds Steady

Bitcoin, often promoted as “digital gold” and a sound, censorship-resistant asset, is proving more like an “ATM” during periods of market stress, with investors selling quickly to raise cash.

Geopolitical tensions last week—including Trump’s tariff threats against NATO allies over Greenland and speculation of potential military action in the Arctic—spurred volatility. Since January 18, when these threats emerged, Bitcoin has fallen 6.6%, while gold has climbed 8.6% to nearly $5,000 per ounce.

The difference lies in how each asset functions under stress. Bitcoin’s constant trading, deep liquidity, and instant settlement make it easy to offload, whereas gold, though less liquid, tends to be held. “Liquidity preference dominates in times of uncertainty, and this hurts Bitcoin more than gold,” said Greg Cipolaro, NYDIG’s Global Head of Research. “Despite its liquidity, Bitcoin is more volatile and often sold reflexively as leverage is unwound, while gold continues to act as a true liquidity sink.”

Large holders amplify the effect. Central banks are buying gold at record levels, while long-term Bitcoin holders are selling, creating a persistent “seller overhang” that suppresses prices.

Another factor is risk perception. Gold excels as a hedge against immediate shocks—war, policy threats, or market volatility—while Bitcoin is better suited to long-term risks like fiat debasement, sovereign debt crises, and gradual trust erosion. “As long as current risks are seen as temporary rather than systemic, gold remains the preferred hedge,” Cipolaro said.

In short, Bitcoin’s quick liquidity makes it a convenient cash source during crises, but gold continues to dominate as a safe-haven asset.
