Can BNB Defend Its 200-Day Average After an 8.7% Crash and Rising Bearish Pressure?
BNB faced a sudden wave of selling on Thursday, dropping 8.7% in just one hour after reports of a $6.36 billion security breach involving Binance. The token has struggled to recover compared with Bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies, while derivatives data indicates that bearish traders are increasing their exposure. With BNB trading close to its 200-day exponential moving average (EMA) near $692, the ability to defend this support could determine its next move.
On October 29, BNB plunged from $744.90 to approximately $680 within 60 minutes as news of the reported Binance hack spread across the market. The incident allegedly involved the theft of around $6.36 billion, making it the largest cryptocurrency theft on record.
The token has recovered some ground but continues to lag behind other large-cap cryptocurrencies. BNB is trading near $702, down 6.2% over the past 24 hours. Its market capitalization is approximately $92.4 billion, while its price remains 48.7% below the October 2025 high of $1,370.
Meanwhile, activity in the futures market suggests that traders are preparing for additional volatility. Negative funding rates indicate that short sellers are now paying long-position holders to maintain their bearish bets.
Why Is BNB Experiencing Greater Selling Pressure Than Bitcoin?
BNB’s close relationship with Binance is a major factor behind its weaker performance. As the exchange’s native token, BNB is directly exposed to changes in investor confidence surrounding the platform.
Measured from Thursday’s 20:00 UTC price, BNB remains down 5.6%, underperforming Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP and Dogecoin.
However, the reported exploit did not directly affect the BNB Chain. TRM Labs identified ten blockchain networks involved in the movement of funds from compromised Binance wallets, including Ethereum and Polygon. BNB Chain was not included in the findings.
This suggests that investors are primarily reacting to the potential consequences for Binance rather than a direct security failure within its associated blockchain. Concerns about the exchange’s financial exposure and operational stability have increased pressure on its native cryptocurrency.
Zeus Research analyst Dominick John said the incident had intensified selling across the broader cryptocurrency market, with BNB experiencing the greatest exposure. Rick Maeda of Laevitas offered a more moderate assessment, describing the price decline as relatively limited considering the reported scale of the theft.
Futures Data Shows Traders Increasing Their Short Positions
The derivatives market is providing additional evidence of growing uncertainty surrounding BNB. OKX trading data highlights three notable changes following the sharp correction.
- Funding rates moved below zero: BNB perpetual futures funding shifted from +0.01% before the incident to -0.0266% at midnight and -0.0434% by 08:00 UTC. Short sellers are now paying funding fees to long traders, whereas Bitcoin maintained positive funding during the same period.
- Open interest climbed 20%: Total BNB futures open interest increased from $54.8 million to $66 million as traders opened additional positions following the price decline.
- Long accounts remain more numerous: The long-to-short account ratio increased to 2.79 from 2.66 before the incident, showing that bullish accounts still outnumber bearish ones.
These indicators suggest that many smaller traders are attempting to buy the dip, while other market participants are taking advantage of the weakness to establish short positions.
The resulting imbalance could contribute to a sharp move in either direction. A sustained rebound might force short sellers to close their positions, creating additional buying pressure and potentially triggering a short squeeze. However, another breakdown could expose leveraged long traders to liquidations.
How BNB Reacted to Binance’s Previous Security Incidents
BNB’s earlier responses to major Binance security breaches offer some historical context for the current downturn. On both previous occasions, the token initially declined further before recovering within approximately one month.
May 2019 Binance hack: Hackers stole 7,000 BTC from a Binance hot wallet on May 7. BNB subsequently dropped 17.5% from its pre-hack closing price, reaching $18.30 three days later. However, the token recovered over the following month and traded 39.2% higher.
October 2022 BNB Chain exploit: An attacker exploited a vulnerability in the BNB Chain bridge to mint 2 million BNB worth approximately $570 million. The token reached a low of $256.80 one week later, falling 12.7% below its pre-incident closing price. Within 30 days, BNB had recovered 20.5%.
In the latest incident, BNB has declined as much as 8.7% below its pre-hack level. Although previous recoveries provide historical reference points, the possibility of further losses remains.
Some investors have also compared the situation with FTX’s FTT token, which lost nearly all its value after the exchange collapsed in November 2022. However, the underlying financial circumstances are different.
FTX had used customer assets and lacked sufficient funds to repay users. Binance, on the other hand, has pledged to absorb the losses associated with the reported breach. Tether, Circle and other organizations also reportedly froze approximately $2.7 billion of the stolen funds within hours.
Despite these developments, uncertainty remains over how Binance will finance the compensation. The exchange has not disclosed its exact funding arrangements, while withdrawals remain suspended pending the reopening it expected within 48 hours of its Friday morning update.
BNB Price Analysis: Is $692 the Next Critical Support?
BNB is approaching an important technical level, with its 200-day EMA emerging as a potential dividing line between stabilization and further downside.
The cryptocurrency closed Thursday at $698.46, narrowly above its 200-day EMA at $692.46. During the initial crash, the price briefly moved below this indicator after falling to $680 before recovering.
Meanwhile, the 50-day EMA at $733.06 is positioned above the current price and could act as resistance during a potential recovery.
The four-month chart shows that BNB has returned to a price range last observed in late August. During that period, the token consolidated between $674.60 and $726 for approximately two weeks before breaking out in early September.
The breakout pushed BNB to $809.99 on October 5. However, the latest sell-off has erased the entire advance, returning the cryptocurrency to its previous consolidation zone.
The immediate focus is now on whether buyers can defend the $692 support region. A sustained position above the 200-day EMA could help restore confidence and create an opportunity for BNB to challenge the $733 resistance level.
Conversely, a decisive move below this indicator could increase selling pressure and expose the next major support around $674.60.
Binance’s response to the security incident could ultimately have a greater influence on BNB’s short-term performance than technical indicators. A successful reopening of withdrawals may ease investor concerns and put bearish traders under pressure. However, further delays or speculation that Binance could sell BNB to cover the reported losses may trigger another decline, placing the $674.60 support level in focus.
