BTC Price at a Crossroads as $11B Options Expiry Follows FOMC Decision

Bitcoin is approaching a crucial derivatives event on October 30, as options contracts worth around $11 billion reach expiration. Following the Federal Reserve’s latest interest-rate announcement, traders are evaluating whether BTC can hold its current price range as positions are settled and hedges are adjusted. If the market handles the expiry without another wave of selling, Bitcoin could attempt a relief rally.

The Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate between 3.75% and 4% on October 28, matching expectations. However, two policymakers favored a 0.25-percentage-point increase, highlighting divisions over the central bank’s policy direction. Although the decision removed an immediate uncertainty, the possibility of further tightening remains a concern for risk assets.

With the FOMC meeting concluded, attention is shifting toward derivatives activity, liquidity, and demand. The upcoming settlement could play an important role in determining Bitcoin’s next short-term move.

$11B Bitcoin Options Expiry Could Drive Market Volatility

Approximately $11 billion in Bitcoin options contracts are scheduled to expire on Friday, October 30. The substantial open interest makes the event an important factor for traders preparing for potential price fluctuations.

Pre-expiry data indicated that call options significantly outnumbered put options. One estimate placed the put-to-call ratio at approximately 0.53, meaning more call contracts were outstanding than puts. Calls generally gain value when prices rise, while puts can offer protection against falling prices.

Although the imbalance may indicate bullish positioning, it does not guarantee that Bitcoin will advance. Options are frequently used in hedging and more complex trading strategies, so open interest alone cannot establish the market’s overall direction.

The $78,000 mark has also attracted attention as a potential maximum-pain level. This theoretical price represents the point at which the combined payouts to options holders would be minimized.

However, the maximum-pain estimate does not mean Bitcoin will necessarily trade near $78,000 at expiration. Actual prices will depend on liquidity, market demand, and trading activity as the deadline approaches.

For bullish traders, the preferred outcome would be for BTC to maintain its important support levels through the settlement. If expiring contracts roll off without triggering substantial selling and market makers adjust their hedges smoothly, Bitcoin could have more room to recover.

Fed’s Decision Eases Immediate Uncertainty, but Rate Outlook Remains Unclear

The latest Federal Reserve meeting has concluded, but uncertainty about future monetary policy remains. Policymakers left rates unchanged while acknowledging continued economic strength and elevated inflation.

The two dissenting votes favoring a rate increase suggest that some officials remain concerned about inflationary pressures. This complicates the interpretation of the decision as a positive signal for financial markets.

Bitcoin’s next move may depend partly on whether investors had already priced in the expected rate hold. When the Fed delivers an anticipated outcome without a major surprise, traders often redirect their attention toward liquidity conditions, derivatives positioning, and upcoming economic reports.

That shift could support a relief rally if investors view the announcement as less restrictive than anticipated. Conversely, concerns about a potential rate increase later in the year could continue to suppress demand for riskier investments.

The Fed’s next policy meeting is scheduled for December 8–9. Inflation data, employment figures, and additional comments from policymakers could reshape expectations before then.

Will the October 30 Expiry Help Bitcoin Recover?

The Fed’s decision has removed one immediate source of market risk, but questions about the future direction of interest rates remain. The $11 billion options expiry is now another major event for Bitcoin traders to monitor.

An orderly settlement could help stabilize the market and allow buyers to rebuild momentum. However, adjustments to dealer hedges and changes in liquidity could also trigger further price swings, especially if Bitcoin tests key support levels.

A bullish breakout remains possible, but sustained buying pressure will be needed to confirm a genuine recovery. Whether Bitcoin can defend support and attract fresh demand will determine if the options expiry becomes a turning point or simply precedes another period of volatility.
