BTC at a Crossroads: The Chart Crypto Traders Should Watch

WTI crude oil is approaching a critical price level that could shape inflation expectations, interest rates and the direction of risk assets, including Bitcoin and technology stocks. The U.S. oil benchmark is trading within an increasingly narrow range, raising the possibility of a significant breakout in either direction.

For Bitcoin traders, oil has become an important market indicator because a sharp change in energy prices could influence borrowing costs, monetary policy expectations and demand for speculative investments.

The daily WTI chart shows price movements tightening into a funnel-like formation. After experiencing wide swings in March and April, crude has settled into a narrower range, with lower peaks and less pronounced declines converging around $102.

This structure is commonly known as a coil or pennant pattern. It develops as price volatility contracts, potentially setting the stage for a strong move once the market breaks out of the formation. Naomi Blohm, senior market advisor at agricultural advisory firm Total Farm Marketing, discussed the setup on X, highlighting the possibility of a significant move after the period of consolidation.

However, the pattern does not reveal whether the next move will be upward or downward. Traders are therefore monitoring two important price scenarios.

Oil Could Rally Toward $119 or Retreat to $93

A break above WTI’s upper boundary near $105.50 could open the way for a move toward the March and April highs between $117 and $119.

Such a rally could have consequences beyond the energy market. Higher oil prices can increase inflationary pressure, push government bond yields upward and strengthen expectations that interest rates will remain elevated for longer. These developments could tighten financial conditions and discourage investment in riskier assets.

Bitcoin and technology stocks could come under pressure if rising energy costs revive inflation fears. Crude prices have already gained approximately 80% this year, adding to concerns about persistent price pressures.

Bitcoin is often referred to as digital gold, but its recent trading behavior has more closely resembled equities. CoinDesk’s analysis of TradingView data shows a 30-day correlation of 0.64 between Bitcoin and the Nasdaq 100, indicating that their price movements have frequently aligned.

Bitcoin’s relationship with oil has moved in the opposite direction since the Iran war began. Its 30-day correlation with crude oil has fallen to minus 0.47, compared with positive 0.18 before the conflict.

This negative relationship suggests that another sustained oil rally could coincide with weakness in Bitcoin. If higher energy prices also lift bond yields and undermine technology stocks, cryptocurrencies could face further headwinds.

On the other hand, a break below the lower boundary of WTI’s trading range would bring the $93 level into focus.

A decline in crude prices could ease inflation concerns, reduce pressure on bond yields and improve expectations for future monetary policy. That environment could help support equities and cryptocurrencies by encouraging investors to take on more risk.

Why Crude Oil Matters for Bitcoin Traders

WTI’s next breakout could help establish the broader market direction over the coming weeks, although the outcome remains uncertain.

Iran, a major oil exporter that has been at war with the United States since March, is reportedly preparing for the possibility of higher prices. The country’s budget planners are said to be considering an oil price assumption of $130 per barrel for the next year.

For Bitcoin investors, crude oil’s narrowing trading range offers a useful indicator of potential changes in the macroeconomic environment. A move toward $117–$119 could intensify inflation concerns and weigh on risk assets, while a decline toward $93 could ease those pressures and improve market sentiment.

Until oil breaks decisively out of its current formation, traders will need to account for both scenarios when assessing the outlook for Bitcoin, technology stocks and interest rates.
