Trump-Xi Handshake Bet Hits 50% Probability on Polymarket
Polymarket traders are assigning about 50% odds to Donald Trump and Xi Jinping shaking hands for 10-15 seconds when they meet in Washington on September 24. The scenario currently leads a contract dedicated to the two leaders’ opening greeting.
A hug is priced at 5%, while a kiss has just 1% odds. These markets are focused on the visible interaction between the leaders rather than attempting to predict the outcome of their broader diplomatic discussions.
The handshake contract had approximately $4,200 in trading volume and $57,800 in liquidity as of September 22. That is considerably smaller than the roughly $30.6 million in total volume across Polymarket’s broader Trump-Xi prediction dashboard.
Most of the capital in the wider market is tied to substantive questions involving tariffs, artificial intelligence coordination and Taiwan-related rhetoric. The greeting contracts instead turn a brief public interaction into a binary prediction.
Market Expects a Conventional Greeting
The 10-15 second timeframe is described by Polymarket as consistent with a measured greeting governed by diplomatic protocol.
Trump and Xi adopted a cordial public tone at their May meeting in Beijing, where they highlighted cooperation despite unresolved differences over Taiwan and other matters.
Current pricing appears to reflect expectations of similar protocol at the upcoming summit. Preparatory talks in New York have reportedly concentrated on extending the bilateral trade truce, AI safety mechanisms and non-sensitive trade issues.
Still, the greeting market offers no indication of whether those discussions will produce lasting agreements.
The contract is settled using video evidence, so the outcome depends on the observable length of the handshake rather than the substance of private negotiations.
Greeting Bets Remain a Small Part of the Market
The size of the broader Trump-Xi prediction dashboard highlights the difference between these contracts and markets tied to policy outcomes.
With roughly $30.6 million in aggregate volume, the larger dashboard has attracted substantially more trading activity around tariffs, trade and other issues with potential economic consequences. The handshake contract has a much smaller pool of capital despite its clear and immediate resolution.
If Trump and Xi shake hands for 10-15 seconds, the currently leading outcome would be fulfilled. A greeting outside that duration would not meet the contract’s specified range.
The 5% pricing for a hug and 1% for a kiss places those outcomes well below the handshake scenario.
The odds remain subject to change before September 24 as traders react to new information and adjust their positions.
In the end, the market will measure only the leaders’ on-camera greeting. Its settlement will not reveal whether the trade truce is extended, whether an AI framework is reached or whether the underlying U.S.-China relationship changes.
