Cardano Steps Into AI Agent Payments Race With Solana and XRP Ledger
Cardano has joined the official x402 software ecosystem, providing developers with tools to enable applications and AI agents to make automated payments using ADA and other tokens issued on the Cardano network.
The integration is still being tested. Cardano’s x402 facilitator has successfully processed a transaction on a pre-production network, but the system has not yet been tested on mainnet.
x402 Turns Web Requests Into Payment Flows
The x402 protocol builds on the web’s existing “402 Payment Required” response, allowing payments to be incorporated directly into internet requests.
When an online service requires payment, it can return its price and the necessary payment details. An application or AI agent can then sign the transaction. Once the payment is confirmed, the service can provide the requested data, software or computing resources.
This model is designed for automated transactions between software systems. An AI agent, for example, could purchase access to a particular dataset while generating a report without requiring its user to create an account, submit card information or maintain a subscription.
Coinbase developed x402 in 2025 before contributing it to a Linux Foundation-backed organization. The group includes Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google and Amazon Web Services.
Solana, XRP Ledger and several Ethereum-compatible networks already support the standard, while Cardano is now adding its own implementation.
Cardano’s Integration Remains in Early Testing
Cardano Foundation engineers began work on the integration after an x402 specification was accepted in June. They developed the client and server components required to handle payment requests and added a facilitator to verify and submit transactions.
The initial release supports TypeScript, with Python support planned for a later version.
According to the facilitator documentation, Cardano has completed a transaction on its pre-production network. The implementation has not yet been tested on mainnet.
Developers can therefore begin working with the integration, but the current release should not be viewed as evidence of widespread commercial payments by AI agents using ADA.
Cardano’s entry puts it alongside Solana and XRP Ledger in the developing market for machine-to-machine payments. As autonomous applications become more capable of purchasing services on their own, blockchain networks are seeking a role as the payment infrastructure connecting those agents to data, software and computing resources.
