Mirae’s Bold Korbit Strategy Could Create Korea’s First Crypto Finance Hub
Mirae Asset plans to transform Korbit into a broader digital finance ecosystem, with the South Korean crypto exchange set to become Digital X as part of an ambitious strategy centered on digital assets, stablecoins, and tokenized real-world assets.
The financial group said its vision goes beyond increasing Korbit’s market presence. Mirae aims to create an “intelligent investment platform” that combines investor education, research, market insights, and digital asset infrastructure.
The company said it intends to enhance research and educational capabilities while building Digital X into a platform where financial knowledge, information, and investment analysis are connected in a unified experience.
Mirae explained that the “X” in Digital X represents new possibilities created by the convergence of different asset classes, technologies, and forms of value.
As one of Asia’s largest independent financial and asset management groups, Mirae Asset manages approximately $1 trillion in assets, highlighting the scale of resources behind its digital asset expansion plans.
Turning Korbit into a digital finance hub
The rebrand is only one part of Mirae’s larger strategy.
The company wants Digital X to serve as a central platform connecting real-world assets (RWAs), security token offerings (STOs), stablecoins, traditional investments, and cryptocurrencies. Rather than competing solely as a crypto exchange, Mirae is positioning the platform as a foundation for a new digital investment ecosystem.
Korbit currently holds less than 1% of South Korea’s crypto market, placing it well behind major exchanges such as Upbit and Bithumb. However, Mirae Asset said its objective is not to directly compete for exchange dominance but to promote the long-term development of the digital asset industry.
By combining Mirae’s global investment expertise with Korbit’s digital asset capabilities, the company aims to create a platform offering institutional-level research, financial services, education, and crypto infrastructure.
The firm also stressed that Digital X will operate under strict compliance standards, including anti-money laundering (AML), know-your-customer (KYC), and fraud prevention measures. The focus on regulation suggests the platform is being designed to appeal to institutional investors as well as individual users.
Mirae Asset Consulting, an affiliate of the group, recently raised its ownership stake in Korbit to 97.15% after receiving approval from South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission.
The company said the acquisition was completed through regulatory procedures after evaluating strategic goals, affiliate roles, and potential benefits within the digital asset sector.
Mirae Asset currently has no plans to purchase Korbit’s remaining shares. Instead, the firm said it will focus on improving Digital X’s competitiveness and expanding its position in South Korea’s evolving digital finance landscape.
