XRP News: XRPL Lending Awaits Validator Support Before Cleanup Goes Live

The XRP Ledger is approaching an important software upgrade aimed at resolving existing code issues and improving network stability. The fixCleanup3_4_0 amendment has received backing from 29 of 35 trusted validators, with activation forecast for October 23, assuming the required support remains in place.

Alongside this upgrade, separate governance proposals seek to introduce lending services and additional tools for managing digital assets. These proposals have attracted fewer votes and remain at earlier stages of approval. If adopted, they could expand XRPL’s decentralized finance ecosystem, giving users more opportunities to lend assets and access financial services directly through the network.

According to the amendment tracker, fixCleanup3_4_0 had secured 29 votes by October 9, with the tally unchanged as of October 19. Its projected activation time is 09:34 UTC on October 23.

The amendment brings together a series of technical fixes for XRPL’s expanding DeFi infrastructure. The changes include improved precision and rounding for vault deposits, withdrawals, and clawbacks, as well as updates to freezing, authorization, credential, and destination handling for Single Asset Vaults and the Lending Protocol.

XRPL amendments must maintain support above 80% throughout a 14-day voting period to qualify for activation. Votes are registered at flag ledgers, which occur approximately every 16.5 minutes. Consequently, activation starts at the first qualifying flag ledger after the voting window closes, rather than at its exact expiration time. The ledger’s official record takes precedence over the tracker’s displayed count.

The October 23 target is not guaranteed, as the amendment must retain sufficient validator support. Even if it activates as expected, the upgrade will only implement the cleanup package; it will not automatically enable the broader lending market. Documentation for the xrpld 3.4.0 release identifies LendingProtocolV1_1 as an extension that introduces closed-ended vaults and cash-basis accounting.

The proposed Lending Protocol is built around fixed-term, uncollateralized loans financed by depositors through a Single Vault managed by brokers. Borrowers would repay according to predetermined conditions, while credit checks would be handled off-chain. The current design does not include automated on-chain collateral management or liquidation.

Brokers may provide first-loss capital to absorb losses from defaults before depositors’ funds are affected. However, this arrangement does not eliminate lending risk. In one documented example, a 1,090-token default results in a return of 10.9 tokens, leaving the vault with a loss of 1,079.1 tokens.

When a borrower misses a payment, a grace period applies before the broker can declare the loan in default. This distinction underscores why technical readiness does not equal approval: the cleanup amendment improves the underlying implementation, while separate validator decisions determine whether Single Asset Vaults and lending-related amendments can go live.

RLUSD payment and settlement initiatives are developing on a separate track. Ripple’s API partnership with Cross River is one example of activity outside the lending proposals.

The next milestone for fixCleanup3_4_0 is the first qualifying flag ledger after its 14-day voting period, provided support remains above 80%. The Lending Protocol and LendingProtocolV1_1 must each secure 29 votes and sustain the required backing before their activation countdowns can begin. Single Asset Vault needs at least eight additional votes compared with its October 19 tally.

Validator governance therefore remains the deciding factor in whether XRPL can introduce broader lending capabilities. The cleanup amendment is projected to activate at 09:34 UTC on October 23, with voting results assessed at flag ledgers roughly every 16.5 minutes.

Overall, the developments reflect ongoing efforts to strengthen the XRP Ledger’s reliability while expanding its potential applications. Although lending features remain subject to separate approval, future upgrades could help XRPL grow beyond its established payments and settlement functions.
