September Rate-Hike Bets Surge Above 50% Ahead of FOMC
CME FedWatch data now show traders pricing in nearly a 56% chance that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates by 25 basis points at its Sept. 16, 2026, meeting, CNBC reported.
The shift came after Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh addressed the Jackson Hole symposium, pushing expectations for the September FOMC decision toward an almost even split between a hike and a hold.
For Bitcoin and the wider crypto market, the development primarily signals a change in the interest-rate outlook. It does not necessarily mean that digital assets have already reacted to the repricing.
CNBC’s report highlights stronger expectations for tighter monetary policy and an increase in short-term Treasury yields, but it does not establish a direct impact on Bitcoin, altcoins, crypto derivatives or liquidation activity.
FOMC September 2026 Odds Shift After Warsh’s Jackson Hole Speech
Rate-hike expectations were similarly divided across prediction markets. Kalshi traders gave a 48% probability to a quarter-point increase, while Polymarket participants placed the odds at 49%. CME FedWatch showed the highest estimate, with traders assigning nearly 56% odds to a 25-basis-point hike.
The latest figures represent a significant change from before Warsh’s speech, when markets were pricing in almost a 70% probability that the Fed would keep rates unchanged in September.
Expectations for tighter policy had risen following the Fed’s July meeting, where three FOMC members dissented from the decision to maintain rates and argued that higher borrowing costs were necessary to combat persistent inflation.
Those expectations faded after a weaker-than-anticipated July employment report showed job losses. Inflation also cooled, although price growth remained above the Fed’s 2% target.
Warsh’s Jackson Hole comments added another layer to the debate. He argued that the summer’s better inflation readings were not sufficient evidence that underlying price pressures had significantly improved. According to Warsh, policymakers need greater confidence that underlying inflation is heading toward the Fed’s target at a clear and sufficiently rapid pace.
What a 50%+ Rate-Hike Probability Means for Bitcoin
The latest figures show that investors are reassessing the Fed’s September policy decision, rather than confirming a specific outcome for the crypto market.
Bitcoin is closely watched as a risk-sensitive asset, meaning changes in interest-rate expectations can influence investor sentiment and liquidity conditions. However, the available reporting does not demonstrate that the latest Fed repricing has directly caused a move in Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies.
The bond market has already responded to the changing outlook. CNBC reported that the two-year Treasury yield climbed to its highest level since late July. Since two-year yields are particularly responsive to expectations for near-term Fed policy, the move indicates that traders have adjusted their expectations for September.
Inflation remains a key issue for policymakers. In an Aug. 5 speech, Fed Governor Lisa D. Cook said headline personal consumption expenditures inflation had risen 3.7% over the 12 months through June, while core PCE inflation increased 3.3%.
Cook said inflation remained elevated and indicated that she would consider supporting a rate increase if economic conditions warranted it. At the same time, she noted that continued disinflation could help return inflation to the Fed’s target without additional tightening.
The labor market is another major consideration. Cook pointed to a June unemployment rate of 4.2% and described employment conditions as relatively stable, with both hiring and layoffs remaining subdued.
Consequently, upcoming inflation and employment figures could prove decisive in determining whether the Fed delivers a rate increase at its September meeting.
