Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP Launch Loses Favor With Investors

Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP Launch Loses Favor With Investors

Donald Trump’s TRUMP meme coin briefly reached a valuation of almost $15 billion before its market value declined as the initial social-media excitement faded. Hunter Biden is now launching LAPTOP, a meme token scheduled for September 9 that draws its name from the laptop controversy that became a major political issue before the 2020 presidential election.

The project appears to poke fun at Trump’s own entry into the meme-coin market by turning a long-running political controversy involving the Biden family into a cryptocurrency. As part of the launch strategy, LAPTOP is expected to be distributed to selected wallets belonging to people who lost money on TRUMP.

Hunter Biden has promoted the project with a video featuring conservative politicians and commentators discussing the laptop controversy. The compilation also contains clips of Trump making remarks associated with criticism of the Biden family.

Although the political backstory gives LAPTOP a recognizable identity, the project’s proposed token allocation has already become a source of concern among crypto traders.

LAPTOP’s Tokenomics Face Investor Scrutiny

The project plans to issue 1 billion LAPTOP tokens and launch them on Base. The supply is intended to cover founder holdings, airdrops, conditional token burns, charitable contributions and expenses related to the launch.

Founders, including Hunter Biden, are set to receive 30% of the supply. Another 20% is planned for an airdrop targeting people who suffered losses on TRUMP, along with other selected recipients.

The proposed airdrop would also include Hunter Biden’s Substack subscribers and individuals from a mailing list maintained by Andrew Callaghan, the host of Channel 5.

A further 30% of the supply could be burned depending on certain political or market outcomes. According to reporting first published by The Wall Street Journal, those tokens could be destroyed if a Democrat wins the 2028 presidential election or if LAPTOP’s valuation surpasses TRUMP’s.

The final 20% is intended for charitable purposes and launch expenses.

The project has said founder tokens will be subject to lockups and vesting requirements. It has also outlined a separate account containing tokens associated with predictions related to politics, cryptocurrency and culture, with different outcomes determining whether those tokens are burned or donated.

Controversy Starts Before the Launch

LAPTOP has already attracted criticism from some members of the crypto community, with traders questioning whether the token represents another celebrity-linked project attempting to turn political fame into speculative demand.

Callaghan distanced himself from the launch after his mailing list was identified as part of the planned distribution. He said he and his team were not involved in the project itself and had only provided the subscriber list to help Hunter Biden reach a broader audience.

Kraken also removed a promotional post mentioning LAPTOP after receiving criticism from traders.

Base similarly emphasized that it had no role in creating or promoting the token. Base founder Jesse Pollak said the project had contacted his team but that Base ultimately decided not to participate in its design or promotion.

The episode illustrates the difference between a token being deployed on a blockchain and receiving official support from the network or a crypto business.

It also shows how promotional relationships and token distribution plans can quickly become controversial when a project is built around a political personality.

LAPTOP’s Performance Will Depend on Traders

There is no dependable estimate yet for LAPTOP’s value once it begins trading. Its connection to Hunter Biden, the notoriety of the laptop controversy and the proposed airdrop to certain TRUMP losers could generate considerable attention, but that attention does not guarantee lasting demand.

Investors will ultimately judge the token based on its market performance and the way its distribution structure affects supply. The founder allocation, airdrop, conditional burn mechanism and charitable allocation are likely to remain important points of discussion as trading begins.

LAPTOP is part of a wider trend of politically themed meme coins that use prominent personalities and viral events to attract attention.

For Hunter Biden, the project transforms one of the most recognizable political controversies surrounding his family into a tradable meme asset. Whether that approach produces sustained investor interest or further fuels criticism of celebrity-backed crypto launches will be determined once LAPTOP reaches the open market.
