SEC Cancels Reg Crypto Session, Adding Fresh Uncertainty to Crypto Rules

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has pushed back its long-awaited “Regulation Crypto” proposal after unexpectedly canceling a Friday meeting where the initiative was expected to advance.

The SEC had been preparing to take a significant step toward creating a formal regulatory framework for digital assets. However, the agency said late Thursday that the meeting would not go ahead as scheduled.

An SEC spokesperson cited an “unforeseen scheduling issue” and said the meeting would be moved to a later date. The regulator did not announce a replacement date.

The postponement comes while the Senate’s Digital Asset Market Clarity Act remains stalled. The bill is intended to provide a clearer legal framework for crypto markets in the U.S., leaving industry participants increasingly dependent on the SEC for regulatory progress.

The proposed Regulation Crypto framework is expected to establish a tailored regime for certain investment contracts involving digital assets. It could provide eligible projects with a more flexible route for raising funds and potentially allow them to transition away from SEC oversight after meeting defined requirements.

The latest delay means the crypto sector must continue waiting to see whether Congress or the SEC will move first on comprehensive digital asset regulation.

Regulation Crypto Remains a Major SEC Priority

SEC Chairman Paul Atkins has previously described the initiative as a “tailored offering regime for certain investment contracts” and placed it among the central elements of his digital asset policy agenda.

So far, the SEC has primarily used policy statements and regulatory guidance to explain how securities rules apply to cryptocurrencies. A formal rulemaking would offer a more lasting framework and involve publishing proposed rules for public review and comment.

The regulator was also expected to advance its “innovation exemption,” which could provide greater flexibility for companies developing and trading tokenized securities. That initiative is likewise expected to be delayed.

Senate Legislation Faces Its Own Roadblocks

The industry is also watching the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which lawmakers could revisit when the Senate returns next month.

The legislation still faces major obstacles, as negotiations between lawmakers and the White House have not yet produced enough support. The bill would need at least 60 votes to pass the Senate.

With the SEC’s crypto rulemaking postponed and the Clarity Act still uncertain, the U.S. digital asset industry faces a longer wait for regulatory clarity.
