Improving XRP Sentiment Fails to Ease Price Uncertainty

Ripple is adding Privy’s embedded wallet technology to the XRP Ledger, enabling developers to build financial applications and AI agents that can create accounts, hold cryptocurrencies, and make payments without requiring users to manage wallets directly. The integration will support payments for online services using XRP and RLUSD, although the extent to which the transactions reflect meaningful economic activity remains uncertain.

Privy, which is owned by Stripe, supplies the wallet infrastructure that developers can incorporate into their products. According to a release shared with CoinDesk, the integration will allow applications to authorize transfers involving XRP, Ripple’s dollar-pegged RLUSD stablecoin, and other assets issued on the XRP Ledger.

The technology could help payment companies offer dollar-linked transfers without requiring customers to manage the private keys needed to authorize transactions.

By using Privy’s existing infrastructure, developers can avoid building wallet systems from the ground up. The service also supports exporting private keys or recovery phrases, allowing users to move their wallets to other platforms.

Companies could also use the technology to equip AI agents with funded wallets for purchasing online services. These automated programs can carry out assigned tasks and pay for resources without direct human involvement in every transaction.

Privy’s documentation explains that wallets managed through company servers can hold and spend funds, including through x402, a payment standard designed to facilitate purchases of data and other digital services.

For example, an AI agent requesting paid data could receive a payment request, approve the transaction, and access the information once the payment is verified. This setup allows software to pay for individual requests automatically, removing the need for a person to open a checkout page for each purchase.

CoinDesk asked the XRP Ledger Foundation which applications are using the integration and whether data is available showing the volume of payments attributable to AI agents.

The announcement follows reports of increasing automated payment activity on the XRP Ledger.

Last week, RippleX Head of Engineering J. Ayo Akinyele said on X that the network had processed more than 13 million x402 agent payments, representing roughly 25% of ledger activity.

Meanwhile, the XRPL AI Hub, operated by payment infrastructure developer t54, reported more than 14.3 million cumulative transactions across 169 registered merchants as of Wednesday.

Despite the high transaction count, the total value transferred remains relatively low.

The dashboard recorded approximately 6,991 XRP and 12,752 RLUSD in cumulative payments. This indicates that many transactions involve small amounts, potentially reflecting automated payments for individual data requests rather than large-scale financial transfers.

Ripple introduced developer tools for this payment model in June, allowing AI agents to create wallets, check balances, and pay for services using XRP or RLUSD. In September, the company expanded its toolkit to support a payment standard developed by Stripe and payments blockchain Tempo. The update also introduced a method for funding repeated requests with XRP instead of settling each transaction individually.

Tuesday’s release stated that the companies plan to expand the integration over time. Potential additions include policy controls and tools for covering network fees on behalf of users.

However, embedding a wallet into an application does not eliminate the need to activate and fund it before transactions can take place.

Privy’s documentation states that a newly created XRP Ledger account must receive a minimum reserve of 1 XRP to become active. As a result, an initial XRP deposit is required even if the account is intended only for sending or receiving RLUSD.

This requirement could add friction for applications seeking to offer seamless stablecoin payments, particularly when onboarding users or automated agents that do not already hold XRP.
