Fed’s Hawkish Hold Sparks Bitcoin Debate as Analysts Split Between Rally and Pullback

Four analysts agree that the Federal Reserve’s hawkish decision to hold interest rates steady has changed the outlook for risk assets, but they differ on whether bitcoin’s biggest challenge is unfolding now or will emerge at the September policy meeting.

The Fed kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged on Wednesday after an unusually uncertain period ahead of the decision, with several market participants previously expecting or advocating for a rate increase. Bitcoin barely reacted, continuing to trade near $64,000 during the announcement and Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference.

Although the market response was muted, analysts remain split on how the Fed’s stance could affect bitcoin in the coming weeks.

Some view the decision as the least favorable outcome for cryptocurrencies, while others believe it was largely anticipated and does not materially alter the broader crypto outlook. Another group argues that bitcoin’s next move will depend on factors beyond the Fed, including liquidity conditions, oil prices, exchange-traded fund flows, and the September meeting.

Andrei Grachev, managing partner at DWF Labs, said the Fed’s hawkish messaging highlights its willingness to prioritize inflation control over economic growth.

The Federal Open Market Committee kept rates in the 3.50%-3.75% range, but three policymakers — Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, and Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan — dissented and called for a 25-basis-point increase. The decision passed by a 9-3 vote. Warsh reinforced the Fed’s position during his press conference, saying inflation above the 2% target remains unacceptable.

Grachev argued that the central bank’s message was clear: policymakers are prepared to maintain tighter financial conditions to contain inflation. He said reduced liquidity and higher funding costs could make leveraged crypto positions more difficult to sustain.

In his view, institutional investors may quickly shift toward a more defensive approach, putting pressure on risk assets. While bitcoin has demonstrated strength during previous restrictive policy periods, Grachev warned that another hawkish surprise could trigger renewed selling pressure.

Can-Luca Köymen, investment strategist at Sygnum Bank, offered a different interpretation, saying the Fed’s decision was broadly in line with expectations.

Köymen said the combination of unchanged rates and a cautious tone reflected the Fed’s effort to maintain flexibility while uncertainty around energy prices continues.

He argued that a restrictive monetary environment does not necessarily represent a worsening outlook for bitcoin. Sygnum’s positive view on crypto was not based on expectations of rapid rate cuts, but on inflation remaining under control — a scenario that remained unchanged after the Fed meeting.

Köymen said investors should continue monitoring oil prices and whether recent improvements in ETF inflows and on-chain accumulation remain sustainable.

Bitget Chief Analyst Ryan Lee focused on the broader market impact, particularly on technology stocks and gold.

Lee said the Fed’s cautious approach was understandable given recent energy market developments. He suggested that earlier improvements in inflation were partly supported by lower energy prices, while policymakers may expect future inflation data to reflect renewed energy pressures.

According to Lee, market discussions have shifted from whether the Fed will cut rates this year to whether policymakers could consider another increase.

He noted that institutional investors have continued to absorb market volatility, suggesting that demand remains resilient. However, he expects technology stocks to face the greatest pressure if interest rates remain elevated.

Lee said the Nasdaq 100 could experience additional valuation pressure as higher yields weigh on growth companies, while gold could also face headwinds if rising yields and dollar strength outweigh safe-haven demand.

Stephen Coltman, head of macro at 21Shares, identified the September Fed meeting as the next important turning point.

Coltman said Wednesday’s decision provided temporary relief for investors but warned that September could become a difficult meeting if inflation remains elevated and policymakers face pressure to act during a politically sensitive period.

Market focus is already shifting toward September, with futures markets pricing in a 72% probability of a rate hike at that meeting. The possibility of further tightening has gained attention after three Fed officials pushed for higher rates at Wednesday’s decision.

For bitcoin, the outlook remains uncertain rather than clearly bearish or bullish. Analysts are not predicting a major selloff, nor are they forecasting an immediate surge.

The debate now centers on the key driver of bitcoin’s next move — liquidity conditions, energy prices, ETF demand, or the Fed’s September policy decision.
