Crypto Investors Pull Funds From Binance at FTX-Era Pace, but Liquidity Stays Strong
Binance has faced a massive wave of customer withdrawals following the $6.3 billion security breach, bringing back comparisons with the collapse of FTX in November 2022. Despite the pressure, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange appears to have maintained sufficient liquidity to withstand the shock, potentially preventing another major crisis for the digital asset industry.
In the first nine and a half hours after restoring services on November 1, Binance recorded $4.65 billion in withdrawals compared with $1.01 billion in incoming deposits. The difference translated into approximately $3.64 billion in net outflows. However, the exchange’s October 28 Proof of Reserves report showed total holdings of $171 billion, putting the withdrawal amount at just 2.1% of its reported assets.
Binance has separately committed more than $6.34 billion toward addressing the consequences of the exploit, including $5 billion in affected tokens. The exchange also disclosed that its partners had successfully frozen around $3 billion associated with the attack.
Binance’s Withdrawal Surge Is Different From the FTX Collapse
Although the scale of withdrawals has revived memories of FTX, the financial circumstances surrounding the two incidents are considerably different.
FTX’s collapse revealed a severe liquidity deficit involving customer deposits and its financial connections with Alameda Research. Binance, meanwhile, has maintained that it will absorb the losses resulting from the latest hack without requiring customers to bear the financial consequences.
Bitcoin’s market performance also highlights the difference between the two events. After the Binance exploit, BTC briefly dropped toward $76,700 before recovering toward $79,000. Importantly, the cryptocurrency managed to defend the closely watched $75,000 support level.
The reaction following FTX’s collapse was much more damaging. On November 8, 2022, Bitcoin declined almost 10% as concerns surrounding the exchange intensified. Selling accelerated on November 9, pushing BTC down another 14.4% to approximately $15,877 at the close, after touching an intraday low of $15,632.
The latest Binance incident has certainly triggered significant withdrawals, leveraged liquidations, and uncertainty across cryptocurrency markets. However, Bitcoin has not experienced the same cascading sell-off that followed FTX’s failure.
Holding above $75,000 suggests that market participants may be interpreting the Binance incident as a serious security breakdown at a major exchange rather than a sign of widespread insolvency or liquidity problems across the crypto ecosystem.
Binance Has Survived Major Regulatory and Financial Challenges Before
The exchange’s previous regulatory settlement provides additional context for its ability to withstand major financial shocks.
In November 2023, Binance agreed to pay more than $4 billion to resolve U.S. investigations involving anti-money laundering deficiencies and sanctions violations. Founder Changpeng Zhao also pleaded guilty to failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program.
As part of the settlement, Zhao resigned from his position as CEO and paid a separate $50 million fine.
Despite the substantial financial penalty and leadership changes, Binance retained its position as the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. The latest exploit now represents another major test of its financial resources, security infrastructure, and ability to maintain user confidence.
The broader market has not escaped the consequences of the attack. Bitcoin and Ethereum experienced declines, spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded substantial outflows, and leveraged traders faced significant liquidations. Both major cryptocurrencies, however, managed to recover some of their losses after reaching their respective lows.
Will Binance Withdrawals Return to Normal?
The direction of customer withdrawals will remain an important indicator of how quickly confidence returns. Updated Proof of Reserves disclosures and the completion of Binance’s security review could provide investors with additional information about the exchange’s financial position.
Although the latest withdrawal figures resemble activity during the FTX crisis, the similarities do not automatically imply the same outcome. Binance has resumed operations, continued processing withdrawals, pledged to cover the hack-related losses, and demonstrated its ability to manage substantial outflows.
The November crisis has revived memories of one of crypto’s darkest periods. However, Binance’s financial position and response to the exploit suggest that the industry may be better positioned to absorb a major exchange-related shock without repeating the widespread collapse witnessed in 2022.
