Bitcoin Surrenders $85K Gains as Renewed AI Anxiety Weighs on Markets

Bitcoin failed to hold its latest breakout above $84,000, retreating toward $82,500 as renewed doubts about AI spending and falling technology futures weakened appetite for risk assets.

The largest cryptocurrency traded just under $82,800 during Thursday’s Asian session after reversing a late-Wednesday rally that briefly lifted it close to $85,000. Mixed financial updates from Tesla and Meta unsettled investors and renewed concerns about the outlook for AI-focused companies.

ZEC was the strongest performer among major cryptocurrencies, rising nearly 3% to approximately $1,290. XRP gained less than 1%, while HYPE dropped 3% to around $79. DOGE declined 2%, SOL slipped about 1%, and ETH, BNB, and TRX each posted losses of less than 1%, according to CoinDesk data.

$82,500 Emerges as a Critical Bitcoin Level

Bitcoin moved above $84,000 late Wednesday, breaking through resistance that had blocked previous attempts on Oct. 13 and 14. The rally peaked around $84,800 before momentum quickly faded.

Over the following six hours, BTC lost more than $2,000, falling to approximately $82,600. The sharp reversal wiped out much of the advance and raised fresh concerns about the strength of the recovery.

Traders are now watching the $82,500 region for signs of whether buyers can defend the price. Some market observers warn that a sustained breakdown could expose Bitcoin to a decline toward $70,000.

Tesla and Meta Results Fail to Restore Confidence

Tesla shares fell 3% in after-hours trading after the company lowered its capital-spending outlook. Lam Research, which supplies equipment to the semiconductor industry, dropped 7% after issuing a weaker forecast.

Meta advanced 2% after increasing its projected AI expenditure, but its gains failed to offset the broader unease surrounding technology companies’ investment plans.

Nasdaq 100 futures slid 1.1%, while S&P 500 futures declined 0.5%, indicating continued pressure on U.S. equities.

Asian Equities Weaken as Oil Climbs

The sell-off extended across Asia, where South Korea’s Kospi dropped 2.2% as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix shares fell. China’s CSI 300 declined 1.7%, moving closer to bear-market territory.

Alibaba led losses among Chinese e-commerce stocks after government officials called for tighter product-quality controls.

Meanwhile, crude oil prices rose as tensions in the Middle East intensified once more. The weaker equity outlook and heightened geopolitical uncertainty added to the pressure on Bitcoin as it struggled to maintain its latest gains.
