Billions Pour Into Chinese AI Rivals as U.S.-China Competition Heats Up

The race between the U.S. and China to develop advanced artificial intelligence is increasingly being fueled by massive private-market investments, with leading AI companies raising billions ahead of potential stock listings.

DeepSeek is close to raising at least $12 billion, with Tencent and battery maker CATL supporting the financing, Bloomberg reported. Strong investor demand could ultimately increase the round to around $15 billion, surpassing the company’s original fundraising goal.

The latest capital raise follows DeepSeek’s introduction of its V4 Flash model, which has improved its competitive position against OpenAI and Anthropic on both performance and cost.

Moonshot AI, the developer of the Kimi chatbot, has also reached a major financing milestone. The company has completed its final private funding round at a $50 billion valuation and is preparing for a potential Hong Kong IPO in the first quarter of 2027.

The planned listing could raise up to $5 billion. Moonshot is also forecasting annual recurring revenue of $2 billion by December, twice its current level.

The enormous funding appetite is not limited to Chinese AI companies. OpenAI was reported last week to be seeking at least $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion pre-money valuation after delaying its IPO.

Bloomberg’s latest report said BlackRock and UAE-based funds are among the potential investors. Together, they could provide as much as $10 billion.

Anthropic is another major AI company weighing a public offering. It is reportedly considering an IPO in November, following the U.S. midterm elections, at a potential valuation of around $2 trillion.

The growing size of these funding rounds reflects the enormous financial resources required to compete in AI. With Chinese firms such as DeepSeek and Moonshot raising capital at extraordinary valuations and U.S. leaders pursuing similarly large sums, the technological rivalry between the two countries is increasingly becoming a battle for investment as well as innovation.
