LIVE: Iran Strike and Fresh Crypto Hacks Send Bitcoin and Altcoins Tumbling

Bitcoin Extends Losses as Iran Tensions and Crypto Security Breaches Rattle Markets

Bitcoin came under heavy pressure as renewed fears surrounding the Iran conflict coincided with a fresh wave of cryptocurrency security incidents. Reports of US strikes on Qeshm Island heightened concerns about potential disruptions to global energy supplies, while repeated attacks on crypto platforms added to an already cautious market environment.

The sell-off is unfolding amid weak investor sentiment, declining ETF activity and uncertainty across international markets. Bitcoin is facing pressure from geopolitical developments as well as growing concerns about security vulnerabilities within the digital asset industry.

Reports of the latest US military action have introduced fresh uncertainty into an eight-month conflict that has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude traded near $105 per barrel as investors assessed the potential impact on energy supplies.

Iran Conflict Fears Put Global Markets on Alert

Concerns about the conflict intensified following reports that US forces had struck Qeshm Island, situated close to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. US officials characterized the operation as defensive, although the latest development could further complicate negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

The two countries have continued diplomatic contacts in an effort to end the conflict, but no major agreement has emerged.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical concern because of its importance to international energy shipments. The route has historically carried approximately one-fifth of global oil and natural gas supplies. Any prolonged disruption could restrict deliveries, push energy prices higher and create additional inflationary pressure.

Rising oil costs could make it more difficult for central banks to bring inflation under control. If policymakers maintain tighter financial conditions for longer, investors may become less willing to hold volatile assets such as Bitcoin.

Stock markets across Asia also weakened as traders considered geopolitical risks, technology-sector losses and uncertainty ahead of the US midterm elections. Reuters reported that MSCI’s Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan fell 1.4%, while South Korean shares declined by as much as 4.1%.

Bitcoin has continued to behave more like a risk-sensitive investment than a traditional safe haven during periods of market stress. This leaves the cryptocurrency exposed when investors reduce their holdings of volatile assets.

Binance and Other Crypto Platforms Face Security Concerns

The latest geopolitical shock has arrived while crypto investors are still assessing the impact of a major Binance security incident involving $6.3 billion in digital assets.

The breach triggered billions of dollars in customer withdrawals, raising questions about the security of centralized exchanges and the industry’s ability to protect funds.

Binance stated that it would cover the losses, while withdrawal activity later showed signs of stabilizing. Nevertheless, the incident has added to uncertainty across an already fragile market.

Other platforms have also reported security problems. Mercado Bitcoin disclosed an incident involving systems connected to customer-related information, while Polymarket experienced unauthorized withdrawals after a third-party service provider was compromised.

These incidents have highlighted vulnerabilities across the wider crypto ecosystem, including trading platforms, digital wallets and external infrastructure used by blockchain applications.

Security reports have also identified attacks targeting outdated BTCPay Server installations and a vulnerable WordPress plugin designed to process cryptocurrency payments.

A continuing series of breaches could make it harder for the industry to rebuild investor confidence. Users may increasingly prefer self-custody solutions or limit their exposure to platforms until security practices improve.

This is particularly damaging at a time when crypto markets need fresh investment and stronger participation to support a meaningful recovery.

Bitcoin’s Recovery Faces Two Major Challenges

Bitcoin’s short-term direction will depend partly on developments in the Middle East and partly on whether the crypto industry can contain its growing security problems.

Any progress toward a diplomatic settlement between the US and Iran could reduce concerns about energy supplies and improve investor appetite for risk assets. However, further escalation around the Strait of Hormuz could push crude prices higher, revive inflation fears and trigger another round of selling across global markets.

The industry’s response to recent hacks will also remain important. Binance’s withdrawal activity and any additional security disclosures could provide clues about whether investors are regaining confidence or moving capital away from crypto platforms.

For now, Bitcoin is facing pressure from both international developments and problems within its own industry. If selling continues, the cryptocurrency could encounter further obstacles to its recovery. A reduction in geopolitical tensions and a limited fallout from recent breaches could, however, encourage buyers to return.

Tether Discloses Bitcoin Holdings of 150,000 BTC

Tether has revealed that its Bitcoin treasury has reached approximately 150,000 BTC, placing the stablecoin issuer among the largest corporate holders of the cryptocurrency.

CEO Paolo Ardoino announced the figure during his keynote speech at the Plan ₿ Forum in Lugano, Switzerland, on November 3. At the current market price, the position was valued at roughly $11.5 billion.

The disclosure puts Tether behind Strategy among major corporate Bitcoin treasury holders. It also demonstrates how the company is directing part of the profits from its stablecoin operations toward long-term Bitcoin accumulation.

Tether introduced this approach in May 2023, when it announced plans to allocate up to 15% of its net realized operating profits to BTC purchases.

Consensys Launches Institutional Settlement Infrastructure

Consensys has introduced a new blockchain settlement network aimed at banks, asset managers and financial market infrastructure providers.

The announcement comes as the company approaches its planned separation from MetaMask, bringing its institutional strategy into focus and raising questions about the wallet’s future direction.

The network, called Sovereign Network Interoperability, was unveiled at Devcon. It is designed to coordinate transactions between independently operated financial networks and improve connectivity across institutional blockchain infrastructure.

The initiative highlights Consensys’ growing interest in traditional financial institutions as MetaMask prepares for a more independent role.

Zcash Upgrade Targets Faster Block Production

Zcash is preparing to introduce its NU7 network upgrade on November 5, with the changes expected to reduce target block times from 75 seconds to 25 seconds.

The activation is scheduled for block height 3,543,405, according to the network’s deployment plan. The reduction is expected to make transaction confirmations significantly faster.

However, the technical development comes amid disagreements over Zcash’s community-grants funding system. Recent weakness in ZEC’s price has added to uncertainty, leaving investors to weigh the benefits of the upgrade against ongoing governance concerns.

Vitalik Buterin’s Devcon Appearance Draws Attention as Bitmine Buys More ETH

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin attracted attention at Devcon 8 in Mumbai after appearing on stage wearing a green cloak and a smiling mask.

While the costume provided an entertaining moment at the developer event, Bitmine Immersion Technologies continued expanding its Ethereum treasury.

The company added another 8,573 ETH, bringing its holdings to 6,060,506 ETH as of November 1. The position was valued at approximately $13.7 billion using an ETH price of $2,261.

Bitmine now controls around 4.9% of Ethereum’s total supply and is approaching its stated objective of accumulating 5%.

US Midterm Elections Could Shape Crypto’s Policy Outlook

The November 3 US midterm elections have added another source of uncertainty for cryptocurrency investors. The results could influence digital asset regulation, government spending and expectations across financial markets.

Republicans are seeking to retain control of Congress, while Democrats are attempting to regain power in at least one chamber. The outcome could determine how much legislative support President Donald Trump receives for his economic agenda.

Crypto investors are watching three developments in particular: Trump’s proposed $5,000 stimulus dividend, the future of stalled cryptocurrency legislation and rising tensions involving Iran.

Although the election results are unlikely to change the fundamentals of digital assets immediately, they could influence expectations for liquidity, regulatory clarity and the broader economic environment.
