PlayStation Meets Crypto? Sony’s Soneium Raises GTA 6 Speculation
Sony’s Soneium blockchain platform is expanding its Web3 ambitions with plans to launch its native ecosystem coin, SONEIUM, on October 26. The initiative seeks to establish an on-chain economy that brings entertainment intellectual property (IP), creators, developers, fans, and investors together.
The network already supports more than 250 applications across gaming, music, anime, films, collectibles, and fan-created content. Its next development phase will emphasize tokenized IP, potentially opening new funding channels for creators and rights holders while giving fans ways to support entertainment projects.
Moriusa, a character-based IP from Tokyo-based entertainment group Super State Holdings, is set to become the first project under the initiative. Soneium also plans to collaborate with K-pop IP company DayOneDream to tokenize royalties generated by concert-related businesses.
These partnerships reflect Soneium’s broader objective of connecting entertainment businesses with communities interested in supporting their growth and participating in new economic opportunities.
Rather than focusing exclusively on cryptocurrency trading, the platform aims to build a financial ecosystem around creative works. Its planned products include IP Vault, which would offer indirect access to entertainment investment opportunities, and IP Bond, a bond product backed by entertainment businesses.
The initiative has also prompted speculation about whether blockchain technology could eventually become part of Sony’s PlayStation ecosystem or major gaming franchises such as Grand Theft Auto VI.
Sony’s Soneium Coin Raises Questions About PlayStation and GTA 6
PlayStation is a natural focus given Sony’s influence in the gaming industry, while GTA 6 is expected to be one of the biggest entertainment releases of its generation. Both highlight the commercial potential of major gaming properties and their global audiences.
This raises the possibility of blockchain technology creating new ways for fans to participate in gaming-related economies beyond purchasing games and digital content.
Soneium’s planned infrastructure is designed to make intellectual property attribution, licensing, and royalty distribution programmable on-chain. In principle, these capabilities could support authorized digital collectibles, licensed fan projects, and alternative funding models for entertainment ventures.
Such systems could eventually allow fans to support independent game developers or participate in licensed entertainment projects through tokenized assets.
However, a connection between SONEIUM and either PlayStation or GTA 6 remains unconfirmed. Sony’s announcement does not establish that its ecosystem coin will be integrated into PlayStation games, and there is no confirmed indication that Rockstar Games plans to introduce blockchain features into GTA 6.
Soneium’s Broader Goal Is to Expand Creator Funding
A Soneium executive highlighted the platform’s ambition to help creators fund future projects at a larger scale while exploring new forms of expression and more direct relationships with fans.
The strategy centers on creating additional ways for creative projects to attract funding and distribute revenue. Tokenized intellectual property could enable creators to seek financial support from their communities, while programmable payment systems could distribute proceeds under predefined agreements.
Soneium is also working on an Onchain IP Architecture built around three components: an IP Registry, an IP Graph, and an IP Execution Layer. These elements are intended to link creative works with ownership records, licensing conditions, and revenue mechanisms.
This infrastructure could become increasingly relevant as artificial intelligence makes it easier to produce, modify, and remix digital content. Connecting creative assets with licensing rules and payment arrangements could help creators and rights holders manage how their work is used.
By combining entertainment financing, digital ownership, and programmable licensing, Soneium is developing a broader entertainment-focused blockchain strategy rather than simply introducing another gaming cryptocurrency.
Whether that strategy eventually reaches PlayStation or blockbuster franchises such as GTA 6 remains uncertain. For now, the emphasis is on creating infrastructure that connects entertainment properties with creators, investors, and fans.
