JPMorgan Bitcoin Prediction Highlights Growing Edge Over Stock Market
JPMorgan Asset Management has issued its first long-term Bitcoin forecast, projecting an annual compounded return of 10% over the next 10 to 15 years. The estimate surpasses the firm’s outlook for U.S. large-cap stocks, real estate investment trusts (REITs) and gold, positioning Bitcoin as the highest-returning asset in the comparison.
The projection appeared in JPMorgan’s 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions, published on October 19 as the firm’s 31st annual edition. The report evaluates more than 200 asset classes and estimates their potential returns over a 10- to 15-year period to guide strategic investment decisions.
JPMorgan estimates Bitcoin’s annual compounded return at 10%, compared with 8.2% for U.S. REITs, 7.5% for U.S. large-cap stocks and 5.5% for gold. This puts Bitcoin 2.5 percentage points ahead of large-cap equities, 1.8 points above REITs and 4.5 points above gold.
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan highlighted the projections, which also assign U.S. small-cap stocks a 7.7% expected return. His assessment of Bitcoin as the top-performing asset is based on his interpretation of JPMorgan’s figures. The estimates are intended for long-term planning rather than predicting short-term market movements.
Bitcoin’s Higher Return Projection Carries Greater Risk
JPMorgan’s optimistic outlook comes with a substantial volatility estimate. The firm projects Bitcoin’s annualized volatility at 55%, compared with 18% for U.S. large-cap equities and 17.2% for gold.
The report also places Bitcoin’s arithmetic average annual return at 20.9%. Unlike compounded returns, which account for the cumulative effects of gains and losses, arithmetic returns represent the simple average of annual performance. The 10% compounded estimate therefore provides a more useful measure of potential investment growth over an extended period.
Volatility can significantly reduce actual compounded returns because losses shrink the capital base, requiring larger gains to recover previous declines. At a steady annual growth rate of 10%, an investment would grow to approximately 2.59 times its initial value in 10 years and 4.18 times in 15 years. These figures are illustrative, not guaranteed outcomes.
Why Bitcoin Remains Outside JPMorgan’s Main Portfolio Model
Despite its strong projected returns, Bitcoin has not been added to JPMorgan’s primary covariance matrices for long-term portfolio construction. Instead, the firm analyzes the cryptocurrency using a separate, smaller matrix that includes selected publicly traded assets.
Covariance matrices help portfolio managers understand how different investments move relative to one another, allowing them to evaluate diversification opportunities and overall risk. JPMorgan cites Bitcoin’s high volatility and inconsistent correlations with traditional assets as key obstacles to incorporating it into the main framework.
Consequently, the forecast does not recommend a specific Bitcoin allocation. Although the cryptocurrency offers attractive modeled returns, its unpredictable risk relationships can make it difficult for institutional investors to integrate into diversified portfolios.
JPMorgan also projects a 7% annual return for a conventional portfolio split 60% into equities and 40% into bonds. A portfolio with a 30% allocation to diversified alternative investments could deliver 7.5%, depending on its composition.
The firm’s broader outlook considers artificial intelligence-driven productivity gains, corporate profitability and higher bond yields. Based on information available through September 30, 2026, the projections are updated annually and intended to support long-term investment planning.
