Asia Crypto Watch: ETH Gains Momentum Toward $5K on Rising Demand

27/8/2025 – ETH Eyes $5K as Institutional Flows Boost Momentum

Ethereum (ETH) continues to outpace Bitcoin (BTC), driven by robust institutional inflows, new altcoin narratives, and rising expectations of a $5,000 test. Upcoming macroeconomic data could, however, challenge the current optimism.

On Polymarket, traders now assign a 26% probability of ETH hitting $5,000 this month, up from 16% just days ago. The increase reflects momentum from institutional accumulation and shifting BTC-to-ETH flows.

“Ethereum’s strength is primarily supported by significant inflows that have created a strong institutional liquidity floor,” said March Zheng, General Partner at Bizantine Capital. He noted that ETH’s rebound is overdue given the low ETH/BTC ratio, and the current cycle benefits from broader stablecoin adoption and clearer regulatory signals.

Market rotation further supports the rally. XRP joined ETH in leading major tokens, while emerging narratives, including CRO following Trump Media’s “Cronos Treasury” initiative, attracted fresh capital. Retail activity also surged—Hyperliquid’s trading volume in July surpassed Robinhood, with its $HYPE token posting double-digit gains, highlighting liquidity redistribution across the crypto sector.

Institutional conviction continues to reinforce Ethereum’s performance. “Markets respond to headlines, but long-term value is driven by fundamentals,” said Gracie Lin, CEO of OKX Singapore. “Ethereum’s utility, paired with large institutional moves like BitMine’s ETH accumulation, strengthens its position at the core of crypto. Upcoming U.S. PCE data will test whether this conviction holds amid volatility.”

ETH has gained roughly 20% over the past 30 days, compared with Bitcoin’s 6% decline, and trading volumes indicate ETH commanding substantial liquidity despite a smaller market cap.

Market Movements

  • BTC: $111,733 – Weak on-chain activity and $940M in liquidations signal fading momentum.
  • ETH: $4,598 – Institutional inflows drive the rally, though DeFi activity remains subdued.
  • Gold: $3,410 – Holding above $3,400 as central bank buying and rate-cut expectations bolster safe-haven demand.
  • Nikkei 225: Down 0.17%, amid mixed Asia-Pacific market performance.
  • S&P 500: Up 0.41% to 6,465.94, as investors watch Fed developments and Nvidia earnings.
