Why Did Bitcoin Crash? BTC Loses $2,000 in Sudden Sell-Off
Bitcoin plunged below $84,000 after failing to hold its latest advance toward the $87,000-$87,800 resistance zone, triggering a sharp move lower across the crypto market. The drop came shortly after four newly created Hyperliquid wallets deposited a combined $1 million in USDC and established 40x leveraged short positions totaling 148.49 BTC, worth roughly $12.5 million at the reported notional value.
The four addresses funded their accounts with $1 million in USDC before taking the short positions. Using 40x leverage, they built a combined BTC short exposure of 148.49 BTC. Bitcoin subsequently fell through $84,000, making the timing of the trades particularly striking in hindsight.
According to the reported sequence, the wallets entered their leveraged shorts before Bitcoin lost the $84,000 level. The failure to break and hold above resistance had already weakened the market, while liquidations of leveraged long positions added further selling pressure during the decline.
Leverage can magnify moves once prices begin trending. A falling Bitcoin price can force long traders to close positions, creating additional sell orders and accelerating the decline. Conversely, a sudden recovery can pressure short sellers, with position closures and liquidations potentially fueling further gains.
Traders are now keeping a close watch on the $80,000 area as the next major support zone. Bitcoin holding above that level could allow buyers to attempt a recovery, while a break below it could trigger another round of leveraged liquidations and increase market volatility.
For now, the wallet activity highlights an unusually well-timed set of trades, but it does not prove that the traders knew about the decline in advance or caused it. The 40x shorts were opened before Bitcoin fell, and long liquidations contributed to the selling. Establishing anything more would require additional verified information about the wallets, their positions and broader market activity around the $80,000 level.
