OpenAI Reportedly Seeks $30B at $1.4T Valuation Amid IPO Delay

OpenAI is reportedly seeking at least $30 billion in fresh capital at a valuation of around $1.4 trillion, according to Bloomberg, as the ChatGPT developer delays its public-market plans while expanding its artificial intelligence business.

The proposed valuation does not include the new funds. The financing would strengthen OpenAI’s capital position ahead of a future public listing after the company postponed plans for a 2026 IPO.

OpenAI last raised a major round in March, securing $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation that included the new investment.

CEO Sam Altman has said the company will not list publicly this year. He cited heightened concerns about AI safety as well as the challenges of adapting to increasingly capable AI systems.

OpenAI’s business has continued to grow despite the delay. Its annualized revenue run rate surpassed $40 billion over the summer and has reportedly increased 70% since July, Bloomberg reported.

The company is simultaneously adding new commercial products. OpenAI has unveiled Dots, an AI agent designed to operate continuously, and launched a $500 subscription tier.

The fundraising effort comes amid major capital activity across the AI industry. Anthropic is expected to pursue an IPO in November, while its prospectus reportedly outlines plans to spend $518 billion on cloud computing and infrastructure.

If Anthropic moves forward with the offering, the potential IPO could value the company at more than $2 trillion.
