NEAR Launches Tokenized Stocks as Distribution Takes Priority Over Scale

NEAR and Ondo Finance have launched tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs through near.com, initially giving eligible users access to 20 assets, including Nvidia, Tesla, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, SPY and QQQ.

The rollout allows users to fund their accounts with stablecoins or other supported cryptocurrencies from more than 30 blockchain networks. NEAR Intents acts as the cross-chain infrastructure behind the integration, with the broader goal of making tokenized securities accessible through wallets, applications and DeFi platforms.

Rather than competing on the size of its initial asset list, the launch places greater emphasis on distribution. Ondo’s broader tokenized securities platform offers more than 100 stocks and ETFs, while the NEAR integration currently provides access to only 20.

Near.com serves as the user-facing platform for accessing accounts and executing trades. NEAR Intents operates separately as a routing layer that can connect tokenized securities with external wallets, applications and decentralized finance ecosystems.

Ondo’s broader offering includes individual equities as well as ETFs such as SPY, QQQ, TLT, TIP and AGG. The 20 assets available through NEAR are therefore a limited selection from Ondo’s larger catalog rather than a replacement for the full platform.

Stablecoin-Based Purchases

Purchases on the platform use USDon, which Ondo says is backed 1:1 by U.S. dollars held in an Ondo Stocks brokerage account.

When users deposit another supported stablecoin, the system automatically converts those funds into USDon before purchasing a tokenized security. The process is reversed when the asset is redeemed.

Ondo says this structure is designed to simplify the transaction process and avoid dependence on traditional securities settlement windows.

Users can deposit supported crypto or stablecoins from more than 30 networks and exchange them for eligible tokenized stocks or ETFs within a single transaction. This reduces the need for separate bridging, funding and trading steps.

The current NEAR deployment remains limited to 20 assets, however, meaning users should verify availability before attempting to purchase a particular stock or ETF.

NEAR Intents Expands the Distribution Model

The broader role of NEAR Intents could prove more significant than the initial list of available assets.

The infrastructure is designed to route tokenized securities beyond near.com, potentially allowing wallets, DeFi applications and other blockchain-based platforms to offer access to the same assets.

This makes the 20-asset launch more of an initial distribution point than a definitive limit on the number of securities that could eventually become available through the NEAR ecosystem.

Ondo currently focuses its tokenized securities on companies and funds listed on the NYSE and NASDAQ, although its documentation leaves room for expansion to securities listed on exchanges outside the United States.

Other companies are also developing tokenized-equity platforms. Robinhood, for example, has pursued its own blockchain infrastructure for tokenized stocks, though its approach differs from the NEAR-Ondo model.

Geographic Restrictions Remain

Ondo’s tokenized securities are not available to U.S. persons. Its documentation states that the products are offered to eligible individuals and organizations outside the United States and other restricted jurisdictions, with additional regional limitations applying.

These products provide tokenized exposure to NYSE- and NASDAQ-listed securities rather than conventional ownership of shares through a traditional brokerage account.

Regulatory rules surrounding tokenized equities continue to vary between jurisdictions. The NEAR-Ondo launch does not remove those restrictions or expand access to the products for U.S.-based investors.
