Crypto Markets Recover as Bitcoin Tops $82K and DeFi Tokens Outpace Altcoins

Bitcoin continued its rebound on Monday, trading near $82,500–$82,700 as a recovery in global equities improved sentiment across crypto markets. DeFi tokens outperformed other sectors, while traders assessed derivatives activity for signs of whether the rally could continue.

BTC gained around 0.5% from midnight UTC, extending its recovery from Sunday’s low near $80,700. The move kept Bitcoin above the brief drop below $80,000 seen on Thursday.

Ether (ETH) rose 0.75% to approximately $2,430, while the CoinDesk 80 index (CD80) advanced 0.9%. The CoinDesk 5 index (CD5) added 0.35%. DeFi led the sector breakdown with a 0.81% gain, and all six assets in the DFX index finished higher.

The improvement in crypto prices followed a turbulent week for technology shares. The Nasdaq fell 4.5%, its steepest weekly decline since June, as investors grew concerned about the scale of artificial intelligence investment and rising debt. AI infrastructure company CoreWeave (CRWV) dropped 25% during the sell-off.

Markets showed signs of stabilizing Monday, with Nasdaq 100 futures gaining more than 1% and Asian stocks moving higher. China’s third-quarter GDP expanded 4.5%, exceeding forecasts, while lower oil prices also helped ease pressure on risk assets. Investors are now looking ahead to quarterly results from Meta Platforms (META) and Tesla (TSLA), both scheduled for later in the week.

Derivatives point to increased trading activity

Crypto futures volume surged 51% over 24 hours to $146 billion, while aggregate open interest climbed a more modest 1.25% to $141 billion. Liquidations totaled $329 million, little changed from the previous day, and the taker long-short ratio remained broadly balanced.

Bitcoin, Ether, Solana and XRP all moved higher as their notional open interest grew faster than their prices. Positive annualized funding rates across their perpetual futures contracts indicate that long traders were paying short traders to maintain bullish positions.

However, open-interest-adjusted cumulative volume delta remained flat to negative. That suggests aggressive sell orders were meeting or exceeding market buying, raising questions about the strength of spot demand behind the rebound. The rally could therefore remain vulnerable if leveraged positions begin to unwind.

Open interest also declined in Dogecoin, Uniswap and crude oil perpetual markets, alongside mostly flat or negative price action. The pattern points to traders reducing existing exposure rather than adding new positions.

Cardano presented a different setup. ADA gained nearly 1% over 24 hours, yet its annualized perpetual funding rate remained negative at -8%, the only negative reading among major cryptocurrencies. With short sellers paying to keep positions open and cumulative volume delta remaining negative, another price increase could force some bearish traders to cover their positions.

Volatility measures painted a calmer picture than traditional markets. Bitcoin’s and Ether’s 30-day implied volatility indexes, BVIV and EVIV, remained relatively subdued despite a sharp rise in the VIX on Friday. Historical patterns suggest the VIX could normalize on Monday.

Options trading also showed signs of caution. All five of Deribit’s most-traded options over the preceding 24 hours were Bitcoin puts with strike prices below spot. Such contracts are often used to hedge against falling prices. Ether options flows, by comparison, were mixed.

Arbitrum and Pump.fun post notable gains

Arbitrum’s ARB token climbed 6.7% to around $0.20 after the Arbitrum Foundation announced its Stablecoin Growth Program on Thursday. The initiative sets aside 2 million ARB for the first 10 teams to hold $10 million in USDG, a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Paxos Digital Singapore. ARB has risen 16.45% since the announcement.

Pump.fun’s PUMP token advanced 7.6%, recovering from a weekend decline that pushed it to approximately $0.0039 on Sunday. No specific catalyst was apparent, although 24-hour trading volume doubled to $215 million.

DeFi assets also extended their recovery. Uniswap (UNI) rose 3.2% to roughly $7.42, Lido (LDO) gained 2.5%, and Ethena (ENA) increased 1.6%. The sector has been recovering after pressure linked to last month’s delay in the Clarity Act and falling yields.

Not all altcoins participated in the advance. Celestia (TIA) dropped 3.9% to about $0.61 after surging 16% on Friday. Starknet (STRK) fell 1% to around $0.06, with CoinDesk data showing its market value down approximately 25% since Friday morning.

Elsewhere, Solana (SOL) gained 1.6% to about $106, XRP advanced 0.6%, and BNB added 0.36%. ADA slipped 0.15%, while Hedera (HBAR) declined 0.83%.

The Altcoin Season Index eased to 56 out of 100 from last week’s high of 63, the strongest reading recorded in 2026 so far. The pullback suggests altcoin momentum has cooled somewhat, even as DeFi tokens and selected smaller assets continue to outperform.
