Crypto Market Whipsaw Leaves $3.5B in Liquidations After March-High Rally

  • Bitcoin’s latest short squeeze sent prices soaring, but mixed on-chain signals and unresolved legislative questions suggest the rally still needs confirmation.
  • Bitcoin traded near $77,500 on Aug. 21, 2026, after jumping almost 8% the previous day and briefly reaching about $78,000. The move pushed BTC above a months-long consolidation range and marked its biggest one-day gain since March. Data cited from The Kobeissi Letter showed total crypto liquidations reached $3.5 billion, with short positions making up more than $3 billion.
  • The sharp recovery was fueled by regulatory optimism, increased liquidity and a wave of leveraged short covering. As Bitcoin moved higher, traders forced to close short positions added additional buying pressure and accelerated the move.

Short Squeeze Triggers $3.5B in Crypto Liquidations

  • Crypto markets recorded roughly $3.50 billion in liquidations over 24 hours, including more than $3 billion from short positions.
  • Bitcoin accounted for approximately $1.76 billion of the liquidations, while Ethereum represented about $1.16 billion. ETH surged nearly 20% and traded above $2,200 during the rally.
  • Crypto-related stocks also rallied. Strategy gained almost 12%, while Coinbase, Circle and BitMine each rose close to 10%.
  • The report pointed to two major catalysts behind the market’s advance. The U.S. Treasury announced plans to raise the limit for individual liquidity-support repurchase operations involving 10- to 30-year Treasury bonds from $2 billion to $4 billion between Sept. 9 and Nov. 4.
  • Standard Chartered’s Kendrick said the Treasury operation resembles the type of liquidity support that has historically helped Bitcoin.
  • Trump also met with U.S. regulators and leaders from the crypto and fintech sectors at the White House. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins, CFTC Chairman Michael Selig and representatives from Coinbase, Ripple and other industry organizations attended the meeting.
  • Trump said the government had ended its confrontation with the crypto industry and raised the possibility of accumulating Bitcoin and other digital assets. However, he did not specify how purchases would be funded or carried out, nor did he provide a timeline.

Key Signals for Bitcoin’s Next Move

  • Analysts said a realized profit-and-loss ratio above 2 combined with a positive Coinbase Premium Index could strengthen the case for a sustained trend reversal. Bitcoin’s $68,500 short-term holder cost basis remains an important level for traders.
  • Legislative uncertainty could still challenge the rally. Polymarket data showed the odds of the CLARITY Act passing this year increased from 20% to 28% following Trump’s comments.
  • Senate Majority Leader Thune submitted a cloture motion for a Sept. 15 vote. The measure would determine whether the Senate can begin formal debate and requires 60 votes, but it is not a final vote on the bill.
