BNB and DeFi Tokens Resist Crypto Selloff as Bitcoin Slips
Bitcoin extended its pullback Tuesday, falling 0.42% since midnight UTC to $78,874, although the broader crypto market showed pockets of strength. The CoinDesk 20 climbed 0.2%, while the memecoin index gained 0.41% as BNB Chain-linked assets rallied.
BTC was trading near $78,800, down 0.42% since midnight UTC and 0.75% over the past 24 hours, according to CoinDesk data. Bitcoin is now roughly 4.1% below last week’s $82,320 high, which remains an important level after bulls failed to push the price above it.
Ether continued to outperform Bitcoin on the day, slipping just 0.02% to around $2,490. Solana was also largely steady, falling 0.06% to $103.77.
Market breadth was still weak, with 42 of the 100 assets in the CoinDesk 100 trading lower. BNB and several ecosystem tokens were among the notable gainers. BNB added 2% since midnight to $754, while CAKE and SYRUP also moved higher as traders favored BNB Chain assets.
The CoinDesk 5 Index declined 0.47% Tuesday, while the CoinDesk 20 rose 0.2%. The CoinDesk Memecoin Index outperformed both, advancing 0.41%.
Derivatives positioning
Futures takers remain cautious: The taker buy-sell ratio continued to lean bearish as major cryptocurrencies faced pressure from rising oil prices, expectations of a potential Federal Reserve rate increase and elevated bond yields. Takers are traders who execute against existing orders at market prices, removing liquidity from exchange order books.
Open interest remains stable despite higher volume: Total 24-hour open interest was little changed at approximately $141 billion, while trading volume increased 5% to $149.85 billion. The divergence suggests more frequent position rotation rather than a major increase in leverage or directional conviction.
AERO becomes the top-100 standout: Aerodrome Finance’s AERO token jumped 17% over 24 hours, making it the strongest gainer among the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market value. Futures open interest simultaneously reached a record 129 million tokens, suggesting that rising long exposure is helping reinforce the spot rally.
Buying pressure backs AERO’s move: The token’s 24-hour open-interest-adjusted cumulative volume delta also remained positive. That reading points to aggressive demand, with buyers increasingly executing through market orders rather than waiting with passive limit orders.
INJ posts a similar bullish setup: Injective’s INJ rose 10% and showed comparable strength in its futures market. The combination supports the token’s breakout above $6, a level that had acted as a supply zone since mid-June and previously restricted its upside.
Bitcoin futures positioning increases: Overall Bitcoin open interest stayed below 700,000 BTC, indicating that leverage demand remains relatively subdued. However, open interest across major USDT- and USD-margined futures rose to 265,000 BTC from 257,000 BTC as BTC dropped from around $80,000 to $78,700. The move may indicate that some traders are opening short positions in preparation for additional declines.
Bearish pressure remains widespread: Negative 24-hour CVD readings across many major cryptocurrencies show that sellers continue to dominate price action. AVAX, XLM and DOGE were notable exceptions, each registering positive CVD readings.
Volatility indicators remain subdued: Bitcoin and Ether volatility gauges are still close to recent lows, suggesting limited demand for options and no major rush among traders to increase hedging positions.
Deribit options point to near-term optimism: Weekly call options led 24-hour trading volume for both BTC and ETH on Deribit. The activity suggests that some traders continue to anticipate short-term gains even as futures taker flows remain bearish.
Token talk
PancakeSwap’s CAKE was one of the strongest performers in the CoinDesk 100, rising 4.9% since midnight UTC and 7.5% over the past 24 hours. The gains extend a rally that began late last week as capital rotated into BNB Chain assets and traders responded to the exchange’s tokenized-stock initiative.
VeChain’s VET gained 8% on the day and 9% over 24 hours, while SYRUP also posted a strong advance. The three DeFi and enterprise-focused tokens were among the market’s top performers as several major cryptocurrencies declined.
Raydium’s RAY recorded the steepest loss, falling 5.5% since midnight UTC. The Solana-based DEX token continued to move in line with weakness in SOL.
Kaspa’s KAS fell 4.7%, giving back most of its weekend gains after ranking among Monday’s biggest 24-hour winners. Bittensor’s TAO also weakened, dropping 1.5% to $256 and bringing its 24-hour loss to 3.7% after leading the market Sunday.
AERO remained the strongest performer over the past 24 hours, gaining 18% to 64 cents. Its immediate pace has slowed, however, with the token up 2.8% since midnight UTC.
Jupiter’s JUP declined another 3.8% to $0.24, marking its second straight session of heavy losses after Monday’s 9% drop. There was no obvious catalyst behind the latest decline.
