Altcoins Lead Crypto Gains as Bitcoin Consolidates Below $83,500

Altcoins are outperforming the largest cryptocurrencies, with the CoinDesk 80 index rising approximately 3% over the past 24 hours. The gain is more than double the CoinDesk 5 index’s 1.2% advance, highlighting renewed interest in smaller digital assets.

Bitcoin (BTC) remains below $83,500 after briefly climbing above $84,000 on Sunday. Ether (ETH) has advanced roughly 2.5% to around $2,560.

Despite the rally, liquidity conditions remain uneven across the crypto market. CoinDesk research shows that Bitcoin and Ether order-book depth, measured in dollar terms, has recovered to levels seen before the October 10, 2025, flash crash. Altcoin liquidity, however, continues to decline.

“Market makers have returned to majors,” CoinDesk research lead Joshua de Vos said in a report published Saturday.

Institutional demand has weakened. U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded $681 million in net outflows last week, their largest weekly withdrawals since June, according to SoSoValue. Most of the money left on Wednesday and Thursday. Spot Ether ETFs have also faced sustained withdrawals, with no positive-flow day since September 28. Their nine-day outflow streak is the longest since June.

Oil prices have retreated, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) falling about 2% to $90 per barrel. The decline followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that Russia would provide 300,000 metric tons of diesel to global markets, representing a partial easing of sanctions. Traders are now watching Wednesday’s U.S. consumer price index (CPI) report for fresh signals about inflation.

Futures and Options Show Diverging Signals

Futures turnover has surged while open interest remains relatively stable. Crypto futures volume increased 81% in 24 hours to $126 billion, whereas open interest rose just 2.44% to $145.8 billion. The gap suggests rapid position turnover rather than a substantial influx of new leveraged exposure.

Buying pressure has strengthened modestly. Long trades represented 52% of 24-hour taker volume, up from 48% the previous week. Taker volume captures orders executed immediately against existing liquidity and offers insight into whether buyers or sellers are more aggressive.

Zcash futures activity remains elevated, but fresh positioning is limited. ZEC ranked fourth in 24-hour futures volume at $5.46 billion, behind Bitcoin, Ether and Solana. Its price increased 6%, while dollar-denominated open interest gained 7%. Adjusting for the effect of the price increase suggests that the number of outstanding contracts rose by only about 1%. Annualized funding reached 10%, meaning long traders are paying short traders. Cumulative volume delta, which measures aggressive buying against selling, remains only slightly positive.

NEAR shows more convincing growth in market participation. The token gained 10%, while open interest climbed 17%. After accounting for the price increase, the number of outstanding contracts grew by approximately 6%. Funding rates are positive, and NEAR has the second-highest 24-hour open-interest-adjusted cumulative volume delta among major tokens. These signals suggest buyers are supporting the move. NEAR has also reached its highest price since December.

Bitcoin and Ether positioning remains subdued. Open interest for both assets has changed little over the past day and remains below the highs seen earlier this year. Trading volumes are also close to typical levels.

Options markets continue to reflect restrained volatility expectations. Bitcoin’s implied volatility index, BVIV, has struggled to move above 40% after recovering from year-to-date lows near 34%. Ether’s volatility index has followed a similar path. The readings indicate that options traders are not pricing in a major near-term price swing.

Oil shorts on Hyperliquid face expensive funding costs. Traders betting on falling oil prices are paying long-position holders annualized funding rates above 100%. These payments help align perpetual futures with spot prices and generally fall on the more crowded side of the market. Such elevated costs could leave short positions vulnerable to a rapid reversal if oil prices rise.

Bitcoin downside hedges dominate Deribit options trading. Put options with strike prices ranging from $55,000 to $80,000 account for a significant share of Bitcoin’s 24-hour options volume. Traders often use puts to hedge against falling prices. Ether options activity is more balanced, with both calls and puts represented among the five most-traded contracts.

STRK, ZRO and ZEC Draw Attention

Starknet (STRK) has gained 76% over the past week, rising 33% on Friday and another 54% on Saturday. The surge follows discussions about potentially separating from Ethereum and becoming an independent, quantum-resistant layer-1 network. Leverage appears to have amplified the rally, while profit-taking on Monday pushed the token down 7.7%.

LayerZero (ZRO) advanced 21% over 24 hours to $2.41, its highest price since May 2025. Its market capitalization has approached $1 billion. The increase appears to reflect a rebound from oversold conditions rather than a specific news catalyst.

Zcash (ZEC) has rallied amid reports tracing stolen funds from the Ledger reseller supply-chain attack. The attacker reportedly routed stolen ether through Tornado Cash before converting it into ZEC through NEAR Intents. Losses associated with devices sold by Malaysian reseller CryptoBilis are estimated at $86 million to $93 million. Ledger has confirmed that at least one affected device contained an unauthorized hardware implant.

Meanwhile, CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season indicator has climbed to 66 out of 100, its highest reading in more than a year. The rise suggests speculative interest in altcoins is strengthening while Bitcoin remains in a consolidation range between $80,000 and $88,000.
