Nearly $1B in Crypto Liquidations Hits Traders as BTC, ETH and XRP Lose Ground
Cryptocurrency markets saw approximately $483 million in Bitcoin and Ether futures positions liquidated over a 24-hour period on Thursday as prices retreated and leveraged traders faced forced closures. Ether accounted for nearly 60% of the total, with its losses roughly twice as steep as Bitcoin’s.
The sell-off gained momentum amid uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision. Bitcoin traded near $81,000, falling around 3% over 24 hours, while Ether dropped more than 6% to approximately $2,350. XRP and Solana’s SOL declined about 5% each, and Dogecoin lost roughly 6%.
Data from CoinGlass reviewed during Asian morning trading showed that Ether futures liquidations totaled about $286 million, compared with $197 million for Bitcoin. Ether fell approximately 6.4% to $2,356, while Bitcoin declined around 3.2% to trade near $81,000.
Leveraged positions are liquidated when traders no longer have sufficient collateral to meet an exchange’s margin requirements after an adverse price movement. The platform automatically closes the positions to limit further exposure. For example, a trader posting $1,000 to control a $10,000 position could face liquidation after a relatively small move against the trade, depending on the leverage used and the exchange’s margin rules.
These forced closures can worsen market declines by adding further trading activity during periods of heavy selling. When prices fall, leveraged long positions may be liquidated automatically, creating additional downward pressure regardless of whether traders intended to exit their positions.
Ether recorded more liquidations than Bitcoin despite having a smaller futures market. Open interest in Ether futures stood at around $30 billion, compared with approximately $52 billion for Bitcoin futures.
The reported liquidation amounts represent the total value of positions forcibly closed, rather than the exact losses suffered by traders. Actual losses depend on each position’s collateral, leverage and execution price.
Selling pressure also spread to smaller cryptocurrencies. Solana futures recorded approximately $31 million in liquidations as SOL declined about 5.5%. Zcash futures saw nearly $19 million in forced closures, while ZEC’s price fell roughly 13%.
