Machi Big Brother’s Million-Dollar Crypto Run Ends in Heavy Losses After 218x Gain

Machi Big Brother’s Million-Dollar Crypto Run Ends in Heavy Losses After 218x Gain

Jeffrey Huang, widely recognized in crypto circles as Machi Big Brother, lost nearly all the value of his Hyperliquid trading account after a liquidation on October 15, 2026. The account reportedly fell from its $12.25 million peak to approximately $21,000.

According to blockchain tracking service Lookonchain, Huang had grown an initial $56,000 investment into $12.25 million over four months. Following the liquidation, however, the remaining balance stood at roughly $21,800, representing a near-total reversal of his trading gains and highlighting the dangers of leveraged positions in volatile markets.

The incident occurred as the broader cryptocurrency derivatives market came under pressure. Bitcoin dropped below $81,000, while Ethereum approached $2,380. When prices move against leveraged trades, losses can reduce collateral below the required margin level, prompting exchanges to close positions automatically. Such liquidations can generate additional selling and deepen an existing market decline.

Bitget Research reported that crypto derivatives liquidations totaled around $811 million on October 14, while aggregate open interest remained close to $140.9 billion after the selloff. In a separate wave during the 24 hours leading up to October 9, liquidations reached $1.09 billion, including approximately $1.05 billion in long positions. These figures show how traders betting on higher prices can face substantial losses during sudden downturns.

Macroeconomic developments added to the negative sentiment. Annual inflation in September came in at 3.7%, exceeding the 3.6% market estimate. Persistent inflation can reduce expectations for interest-rate cuts and strengthen concerns about tighter financial conditions, making risk-sensitive investments such as cryptocurrencies more vulnerable to selling.

Ethereum also faced pressure from institutional fund flows. U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs registered $542.2 million in net outflows during the week ending October 9. Combined with Bitcoin’s fall below $81,000 and Ether’s approach toward $2,380, these developments placed Huang’s liquidation within a broader market retreat rather than an isolated event.

Bitcoin’s $80,000–$81,000 Range Becomes a Critical Level

Bitcoin’s decline below $81,000 brought the $80,000–$81,000 support zone into focus. When prices break beneath a widely watched technical level, traders may reduce exposure or trigger stop-loss orders. In leveraged markets, the move can also push positions toward liquidation, increasing volatility and adding to downward pressure.

Machi Big Brother’s $12.25 Million Peak Nearly Disappears

The reported account figures reveal the scale of Huang’s reversal. Starting with $56,000, he reportedly built his balance to $12.25 million over four months before liquidation left approximately $21,800. The decline amounts to around 99.8% of the account’s reported peak value.

Hyperliquid perpetual futures let traders use leverage to control positions larger than their deposited collateral. If a position accumulates losses and its margin falls below the platform’s required threshold, it can be forcibly closed. The amount remaining in an account depends on the collateral available, any adjustments made to the trade and the execution prices.

A peak account valuation does not necessarily mean all gains have been realized. Open positions can generate large unrealized profits, but those gains can disappear quickly if market conditions reverse. A liquidation can then leave the trader with only a small fraction of the account’s previous value.

Hyperliquid has hosted other substantial leveraged Ether trades, reflecting the platform’s role in crypto derivatives markets. However, activity involving other traders should not be taken as proof of the specific positions responsible for Huang’s reported losses.

Following the liquidation, Huang reportedly resumed trading and opened a fresh Ethereum long position using 25x leverage. The trade could benefit from an increase in ETH’s price, but a decline would magnify losses and reduce the available margin. With leverage at this level, a relatively modest adverse move can put a position at risk of forced closure.

Huang’s reported trading history—from an initial $56,000 to a $12.25 million peak and then to roughly $21,800—illustrates how quickly leveraged gains can be erased. The outcome of his new Ethereum position will depend on subsequent price movements and the trade’s specific terms. Its liquidation level remains unverified without confirmed information about the entry price, position size, collateral and margin requirements.
