BlackBerry Bets on ‘Uncrashable’ Software to Power Next-Gen AI and Robots

BlackBerry shares rallied after the company posted a strong earnings beat, reinforcing its pivot toward becoming a key enabler of the growing AI and robotics sector.

Once a leader in mobile devices with its iconic physical-keyboard smartphones—before being overtaken by Apple’s iPhone—BlackBerry is now re-emerging in a new role.

The company has fully exited the consumer hardware business and repositioned itself as a software provider, delivering critical infrastructure for the physical AI ecosystem.

At the core of this strategy is QNX, a highly reliable operating system designed to act as an “uncrashable” foundation for autonomous machines. Major chipmakers, including Nvidia and AMD, use QNX to power applications such as self-driving cars and industrial robots, ensuring safe and real-time performance.

“As autonomous systems become more prevalent and operate alongside humans, safety, security, reliability, and deterministic performance are essential,” CEO John Giamatteo said during an earnings call. “QNX stands out from probabilistic AI systems by being safety-certified and deterministic, making it extremely difficult to replicate.”

Investors have responded positively, sending the stock sharply higher following the results and improved outlook. Analysts have also highlighted BlackBerry’s increasing importance as foundational infrastructure for the AI boom.

The company’s legacy in secure communications—once favored by governments and enterprises—continues to shape its technology. Its encryption framework is built on the same mathematical principles that underpin modern cryptography.

Now, BlackBerry is applying that expertise to secure AI systems. While QNX has evolved, it still relies heavily on these cryptographic foundations, positioning the company as an emerging force in the next wave of AI innovation.
