HIVE Digital Expands into AI, Securing 7.2 MW Toronto Location for New Canadian Data Hub
HIVE Digital Steps Into AI Sector with Toronto Data Center Acquisition
HIVE Digital Technologies (HIVE) is making a decisive move into artificial intelligence infrastructure, announcing the acquisition of a 7.2-megawatt data center in Toronto to support its subsidiary, BUZZ HPC.
The facility will become BUZZ HPC’s first Tier 3 data center and will undergo upgrades to integrate advanced liquid cooling technology. Once operational, it’s expected to house up to 5,000 high-performance GPUs, enabling large-scale AI model training, inference processing, and cloud services for businesses and government entities.
This strategic expansion is aimed at strengthening Canada’s digital sovereignty by ensuring data remains secure and locally managed.
“With growing demand for AI and high-performance computing, our new Toronto facility is a key step in building a sovereign AI data center entirely owned and operated in Canada,” said Craig Tavares, President and COO of BUZZ HPC. “It’s about data security, compliance, and supporting Canada’s leadership in innovation.”
The acquisition comes as countries worldwide race to secure domestic AI infrastructure to support rapidly evolving technologies like generative AI.
For BUZZ HPC, the new site marks its first fully owned facility. For HIVE, it signifies an ongoing transformation from pure crypto mining toward AI and cloud computing powered by renewable energy.
Other bitcoin mining companies, such as Core Scientific (CORZ), are also pivoting toward AI infrastructure as they seek new revenue streams and resilience amid shifting market dynamics.
