Metaplanet Adds 780 BTC, Expands Holdings to Over 17,100 Bitcoin
Japanese firm Metaplanet has strengthened its position as the largest bitcoin-holding public company outside the U.S., acquiring 780 more BTC and pushing its total to 17,132 BTC — currently valued at nearly $2 billion.
In a disclosure filed Monday, the Tokyo-listed company said it paid an average of ¥17.5 million (approximately $118,176) per bitcoin in the latest purchase. The acquisition builds on Metaplanet’s aggressive bitcoin treasury strategy, modeled after MicroStrategy’s playbook.
The company uses a proprietary performance measure called BTC Yield to gauge shareholder value relative to dilution. Between July 1 and July 28, BTC Yield came in at 22.5%. For the second quarter, it surged to 129.4%, up from 95.6% in Q1.
Since launching its bitcoin-focused strategy, Metaplanet has amassed 17,132 BTC at an average cost basis of $99,732 per coin.
Shares of Metaplanet rose 5% to close at ¥1,240 on Monday, bucking broader market weakness as the Nikkei 225 dropped 1.1%.
