Bitcoin, Ether Now Accepted for Taxes and City Services in Panama City
Panama City Opens Door to Crypto Payments for Public Services
Panama City’s residents will soon be able to pay for municipal services using cryptocurrency, Mayor Mayer Mizrachi announced Wednesday on X.
According to Mizrachi, citizens will be able to use bitcoin (BTC), ether (ETH), and stablecoins such as USDC and tether (USDT) to pay for local taxes, permits, parking violations, and other government fees.
“Previous governments tried to pass a bill through the senate to make this happen,” Mizrachi noted. “But we found a more efficient path that doesn’t require new legislation.”
He explained that while public institutions are legally required to receive payments in U.S. dollars, the city has partnered with a financial institution that will accept crypto and convert it instantly into dollars.
“This setup enables crypto to move freely through both the public sector and the broader economy,” he added.
