Crypto’s $19 Billion Flash Crash: What Has Changed One Year Later?

The crypto market’s Oct. 10, 2025, flash crash wiped out approximately $19 billion in leveraged positions, pushing Bitcoin down from nearly $122,000 to $105,000 after the cryptocurrency had surged to a record above $126,000.

Mark Connors of Risk Dimensions, formerly part of Credit Suisse’s hedge fund positioning product team, said crowded trades remain a significant weakness in crypto markets. Before the crash, open interest was close to historic highs, while optimistic investors expected Bitcoin to reach $250,000 to $400,000 based on previous four-year market cycles.

Connors attributed much of the sell-off to derivatives trading rather than activity directly recorded on the blockchain. He highlighted the impact of “paper bitcoin,” including futures contracts that can influence market prices without requiring ownership of the underlying asset. Perpetual futures continue to play a central role in crypto trading, and exchanges have commercial incentives to offer leveraged trading options.

Although improved order-book data and positioning tools have made it easier to identify market risks, traders still need to exercise caution. Chris Sullivan of Hyperion Decimus recommended avoiding leverage and keeping track of open interest, funding rates and investor sentiment. He also suggested that long-term holders use self-custody and store their assets outside exchanges.

Another large-scale liquidation event remains a possibility while leveraged trading continues to be widespread.

The crash also prompted fresh debate over whether Bitcoin’s traditional four-year cycle remains a useful guide for predicting prices. Connors said the pattern has changed and provides less reliable signals, while macroeconomic conditions and political developments may now have a greater effect on the market.

Despite growing institutional participation through investment products, derivatives continue to exert considerable influence over Bitcoin’s short-term price action. The episode reinforced the importance of monitoring leverage and market positioning when evaluating risks across the cryptocurrency sector.
